Tuesday Night is the Night for Latinos on TV this Fall

Cote de Pablo

Fifteen series premiere or re-premiere on network TV this Tuesday…and nine of them have Latinos in starring or continuing roles

It’s an interesting mix, and unintended snapshot of Latinos progress in Hollywood. Latinas return in prominent roles in two of television’s most popular shows (one of whom is just returning, the other of whom is about to leave forever)…three more are expanding the roles of Latinos in their large existing casts…and two more are brand new, with Latinos in key positions. So: returning, growing, and brand new, on three out of four networks.

Most interesting of all is CBS, where–for the moment at least, and for the first time in a long time, if ever–there are Latinos in prominent positions on every prime time show of the night. Here’s the schedule…and the reason you need to make sure that your DVR is warmed up and read:

Tonita Castro Dads

Cote de Pablo begins her tragically short run on NCIS, as we all try to prepare for her permanent departure, at 8P on CBS.

Christina Aguilera continues to reign over The Voice, at 8P on NBC.

Tonita Castro is on Fox’s Dads at 8P, where she gets to run the bachelor pad.

Stephanie Biatriz and Melissa Fumero return in the second episode of Andy Samberg’s surprisingly funny cop-comedy, Brooklyn Nine Nine, 8:30P on Fox. Read more about Brooklyn Nine Nine here.

Miguel Ferrer moves from recurring characters to a regular member of the cast of NCIS: LA (even though his other show, NCIS: Red Team didn’t make the cut.) See if it makes him any less grumpy at 9P on CBS.

Natalie Morales is the most clueless best friend on Trophy Wife, officially premiering in its regular time slot of 9:30P on ABC.

Our buddy Luis Antonio Ramos (read more about Luis here) and Alex Castillo are two of the lucky winners of the lottery in Lucky 7…but it’s not all champagne and caviar. Check it out at 10P on ABC. You can learn more about the show here, and even catch chef Mario Batali interview Luis and other members of the cast.

Sarah Shahi was an intriguing, mysterious, and surprisingly deadpan assassin for hire in some of last season’s best episodes of Person of Interest. Now she’s a good guy and a regular member of the cast, beginning at 10P on CBS. Even better, Diane Guerrero (Orange is the New Black) guest stars.

Monica Raymund, Jon Seda, and Joe Minoso are putting out fires and breaking hearts as usual, as Chicago Fire returns for a whole new sets of emergencies, 10P on NBC. (That means there are Latinos in regular rolls on all three networks with ten o’clock programming Tuesday nights!)

Thursday night is almost as strong, but Tuesday is a great opportunity to see Latinos–often playing positive roles as Latinos–all over the dial, all season long (we hope!).

Cote de Pablo to Leave “NCIS” in Season 11

Cote de Pablo

It takes a lot of courage to leave the single most-watched program on network TV, but Cote de Pablo is doing exactly that: CBS has confirmed that the Latina actress will stick around for a few episodes to “finish out her storyline,” but to all intents and purposes “Ziva David” won’t be back for Season 11 of NCIS.

Every other members of the cast, including Mark Harmon, will be back for the full season come September 24. Only Harmon had a chance to leave–all the other stars’ contracts are on different schedules–but Harmon re-upped way back in February.

“I’ve had 8 great years with NCIS and Ziva David,” de Pablo said in a statement that accompanied the news. “I have huge respect and affection for Mark, Gary, Michael, David, Rocky, Pauley, Brian, Sean, all of the team and CBS. I look forward to finishing Ziva’s story.”

Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo
in season 10 of NCIS

This is particularly sad news given CBS’ chronically poor showing when it comes to Latinos in front of the camera. In fact, once she’s well and truly gone, de Pablo’s departure may put Marisa Ramirez, now a regular on Blue Bloods, and newly added regular Sarah Shahi on Person of Interest as the only Latinos on the network this fall. (Newcomer James Martinez in the midseason replacement Intelligence may be showing up downstream as well.)

No news about what de Pablo will be doing with all that time on her hands…but we’ll let you know. And of course you’ll be able to see as much of her in NCIS as you like for years to come: NCIS is licensed in more than 200 markets, and ranks as cable’s #1 off-network drama on the USA Network, where it plays over and over and over every single week.

Keeping Up (or trying to) with Sarah Shahi

The second and last season of Fairly Legal, the USA Network light-legal drama starring Sarah Shahi, drops today. But given everything that Shahi has done since, it seems like a long time ago and a long way away for an actress who’s career is definitely on the rise.

If anyone was worried about Shahi’s career after Fairly Legal’s cancellation…they don’t need to both. This bright-eyed and impressive young actress, of Iranian and Spanish descent, hasn’t taken a breath since her series ended. She played a tatoo’d tough girl in Bullet to the Head, Sylvester Stallone’s recent comeback attempt, showed up in a six-episode arc on the NBC hit Chicago Fire, and then found a new home on the CBS techno-paranoid cult hit Person of Interest, where she plays an extremely dangerous, dead-eyed assassin. And she’s just been made a regular for Season Three beginning this fall.

As if that wasn’t enough, she’s a co-star in a Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) action-road picture The Road to Paloma, and co-stars with Michelle Hicks (The Shield) in another assassination actioner, The Adventures of Beatle, both due out this year. And she’s the voice of Killer Frost and her civilian alter ego in the new DC Comics video game Young Justice: Legacy.

We dare you to try and keep up with her on her overactive Twitter feed, @onlysarahshahi, where she bills herself as “that chick from the show.

Ain’t it the truth.

“Office,” “Anatomy,” “Glee,” “Hannibal,” “Parks,” “Person of Interest” and “Elementary” All on Thursday Night

On ABC, Fox and NBC

It’s a beautifully busy night for Latinos this Thursday. You’ll find Oscar Nuñez on The Office at 8:30P on NBC, Sara Ramirez on Grey’s Anatomy at 9P ABC, Lea Michele and maybe even Naya Rivera on Glee at 9P on Fox, Aubrey Plaza on the season (and let’s hope not the series) finale of Parks & Recreation at 9:30P,

…plus guest stars Raúl Esparza on Hannibal and Berto Colon on Elementary

As if the regular weren’t enough, you can see Tony Award winner Raúl Esparza as a familiar (and possibly recurring) character on Hannibal at 10P on NBC, opposite Berto Colon on Elementary on CBS.

Sarah Shahi, Master Assassin Re-appear on Person of Interest Thursday

One of the questiest, most effective recurring characters of the season, Sarah Shahi plays against her smiling, smart-ass type as a cold-hearted and highly efficient assassin–the match of Jim Caviezel character in every way–as she appears for a third time on this weeks Person of Interest9P on CBS.

Sarah Shahi kicks Some More Butt “Person of Interest”

Sarah Shahi usually plays bright and brave young women (as in the USA series Fairly Legal or NBC’s Chicago Fire), but her recurring role on Person of Interest is much more: now she’s a major kick-ass assassin/secret agent, a kind of dark version of Jim Caviezel’s John Reese. Her second appearance is Thursday at 9P on CBS. Hopefully there will be many more.

Another Thursday for Latino Hollywood

Sarah Shahi on Person of Interest tonight

This season, Thursday nights have become a cross-channel showcase for Latino actors and actresses, and tonight looks like another busy one. Latinos are happening up and down the dial, from 8 o’clock on:

Michael Trevino on Vampire Diaries,at 8P on the CW. While Nina Lisandrello continues on Beauty and the Beast at 9P, also on the CW.

Tonight its only Aubrey Plaza on another new Parks & Recreation at 8:30P on NBC. Oscar Nuñez and The Office seem to have the night off, while Sara Ramirez operates with the best of them on Grey’s Anatomy at 9P on ABC. No Glee tonight, its an all American Idol night on Fox. And one of our favorites, Sarah Shahi who’s arc on Chicago Fire seems to be done and Monte Bezell are guest stars on Person of Interest, at 9P on CBS.

Over on FX, Anger Management, Charlie Sheen’s sitcom with Daniela Bobadilla and you might see, real live dad, Martin Sheen in a new episode at 9:30P.

Alana de la Garza and Lin-Manuel Miranda Do No Harm on NBC has been cancelled, but we hope to see them soon on a new project. Guillermo Díaz continues his strong performance on ABC’s Scandal, while Gina Torres is going strong, on the season finale (already) of Suits on USA also at 10P.

It’s a DVR night folks…

Sarah Shahi and Jon Seda talk “Bullet to the Head”

Sarah Shahi

Jon Seda

Bullet to the Head is supposed to be Sylvester Stallone‘s big comeback, and he’s being helped along by a couple of well-regarded Latino actors: Sarah Shahi, late of Fairly Legal, and more recently on Chicago Fire, and Jon Seda, who’s just finished up a successful run on Treme and Chicago Fire too. Here are some quick comments from both of them on working with Stallone, with legendary director Walter Hill (The Long Riders, 48 Hours, Southern Comfort), and about the movie itself. It opens Friday all over the place.

On NBC, Jamie-Lynn Sigler as half of one of the couples with kids on Guys With Kids at 8:30P, then Danny Pino and Raúl Esparza are tense as ever on Law & Order: SVU at 9P, while Monica Raymund, Jeff LimaJoe Minoso, Sarah Shahi and Mo Gallini deal with the horrors of arson on a new Chicago Fire at 10P. On ABC, Wilmer Valderrama guest stars on a new episode of Suburgatory at 9:30P on ABC (Modern Family is a repeat at 9P). And way down on TV Land, Rita Moreno and Valente Rodriguez on Happily Divorced at 10:30P. Time for the DVR.

Then Yara Martinez and Juan Pont Lezica guest star on Nashville.

On CBS: we have Cheech Marin in I Get That a Lot, a show about celebrity pranks. He’s pretending to be a celebrity look-alike. At 8P.

On NBC: Guys With Kids with Jamie-Lynn Sigler as half of one of the couples with kids at 8:30P. Danny Pino and guest star, Raúl Esparza on Law & Order: SVU at 9P, then at 10P, Monica Raymund, Jeff LimaMo Gallini, Sarah Shahi, and Joe Minoso on Chicago Fire.

Then over on TV Land, Rita Moreno and Valente Rodriguez on Happily Divorced at 10:30P. Time for the DVR.

Actual New TV, no kidding: “Guys With Kids,” “Law & Order: SVU” and “Chicago Fire” on Wednesday
