Nicholas Gonzalez Master the Craft of Being in Two Places at Once

Nicholas Gonzalez

Without much (or enough) publicity, Nicholas Gonzalez has slipped into regular appearances on two new series: Sleepy Hollow on Fox and The Witches of East End on Lifetime

Nicholas Gonzalez has been working pretty steadily in Hollywood since his arrival from Texas by way of Palo Alto. He was part of the cast of the fondly remembered Resurrection Blvd. in 2002 and American Family in 2004; he’s been a regular on everything from The O.C. To Melrose Place, and he was part of the short-lived ABC drama Off the Map as well. Now, after appearing as a guest star in a wide range of TV dramas and movies that include Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid and Water and Power, he’s working hard to stay noticed by appearing regularly in two new series: the runaway hit Sleepy Hollow and the just-begun Witches of East End. Despite the long hours, he’s still not getting the exposure he deserves, but he’s not only talented and hard-working, he’s crazy good looking…so it’s only a matter of time. Catch a glimpse of him again on Sleepy Hollow Monday night at 10P on Fox…or watch his appearances in earlier episode right here, on FOX.com’s Video on Demand page.

“Bless Me, Ultima,” “Bates Motel,” “Vegas,” “Nashville” and “Grimm” on DVD this week

Some pretty intense and some just plain fun performances by Latinos are available for viewing or re-viewing on DVD September 17. Among the pickin’s:

Bless Me, Ultima. It never got a decent chance at theatrical distribution–it was never in more than 263 theaters, and that for only a week, back in February–so this earnest and touching attempt to film Rudolfo Anaya’s classic Latino novel might be better off if it’s available on DVD. Miriam Colon, Benito Martinez, and newcomer Luke Ganalon star in the film directed and written for the screen by Carl Franklin.

Bates Motel. Freddy Highmore is a long way from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but as it turns out, the dubious concept of a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho turned out to be an eerie, intelligent, and slightly addictive series on A&E this last year. It will be back for more; in the meantime, you can catch Nestor Carbonell as the world’s creepiest sheriff in most of the episodes…and come on, did they have to give him that haircut on purpose. He looks exactly like a Latino version of Anthony Perkins from the original film.

Vegas. The rough-and-tumble tale of the early days of Vegas, starring major players Randy Quaid and Michael Chiklis had a lot going for it, including a recurring, if never fully realized, role by Aimee Garcia (Dexter). But it didn’t intrigue enough people or the network enough, so Vegas: Season One is actually Vegas: Season Only. But it’s in the box and on the shelf as well.

Nashville didn’t have a regular Latino cast member, but Jay Hernandez was in six episodes, Yara Martinez in three, and Juan Pont Lezica in two, and all of the above are in the Season One DVD.

Grimm has had a strong Latino presence since it began, perhaps because Norberto Barba was executive producer for 34 episodes and directed seven himself, and Jose Molina served as executive producer for five episodes as well. Probably the most prominent example of the Latino influence was the appearance of Bertila Damas in three separate episodes as the all-Spanish-speaking “Pilar,” especially in the stunning “La Llorona” episode–and her character will be returning in the new season. (Lisa Vidal is doing an arc as well.) Add in guest stars like David Barrera, Kate del Castillo, Joseph Aceves, Angela Alvarado, Nicholas Gonzalez and others, and any fan of Latino Hollywood has something Grimm to watch. Season Two is on DVD this week.

Happy Birthday, Ruth Livier!

The creator and star of the online sensation Ylse is having a birthday…and the future looks bright.

We don’t do birthday wishes very often, but Ruth Livier has been a big support of Se Fija! from its earliest days (which weren’t that long ago, we know–we’re just about to celebrate our own first birthday!)…but we did want to reach out and wish her the best.

Ruth is a dynamic and remarkable woman–a performer, a writer, a producer, and a force of nature–as well as the first person–man or woman, of any ethnicity–admitted to the Writer’s Guild of American solely because of her work in online movie-making.

She’s been working hard to raise the funds for a third season of Ylse, her IMAGEN-Award-winning online series about a bright young Latina and her adventures in the Big City. The good news: it’s now in pre-production (though fund-raising continues. Check out the site!). Meanwhile, she’s completed a wide range of other projects, including a couple of episodes of Switched at Birth with Constance Marie, and a new feature film, Climbing Life, that we’ll see in September. #20: Looking to the future: “A Better Life”

There is, sad to say, probably only one movie with Latino actors, a Latino director, and dominant Latino themes that’s got a chance to be remembered come Oscar Nomination time: Chris Weitz’ A Better Life, featuring a touching and award-worthy performance by Demián Bichir.

Because it came out early in the calendar year, and because it received sinfully wretched distribution, A Better Life is already available on DVD. Its message of hope and courage in the face of adversity is a perfect Christmas message, whether it’s set in December or not…and part of that hope is that Bichir, Weitz, and the film in general will get at least a fraction of the attention it deserves in 2012. Pick up your copy here…and Merry Christmas!

Esai Morales will be kidnapped on Saturday

He leads a large Latino cast in Lifetime’s true-crime drama

Not so long ago, the Lifetime Channel produced a documentary about the real-life kidnapping of Eduardo Valseca, the son of a Mexican newspaper magnate in rural Mexico, and the harrowing process of securing his release from a ruthless band of criminals who were in it only and exclusively for the money.

The story was so compeling that Lifetime decided to make a movie of the same story…and the result is We Have Your Husband, starring Esai Morales and Teri Polo, as well as a large cast of Latino actors. The cast includes Nicholas Gonzalez, Danny MoraIna Barron, Marco Rodriguez and many others. Read the rest of this entry »

“Charlie’s Angels” cancelled (but you could see it coming)

Elizabeth Peña and the Invisible “Angels”

Word has just come down: ABC has cancelled the unfortunate (in so many ways) remake of Charlie’s Angels. It’s not exactly the surprise: it opened to lukewarm ratings and has been skidding down hill ever since; one week-to-week decline was 20%, and that was after the initial fall-off. But if you were one of the folks keeping an eye on ABC’s public face the last few weeks, you could tell they lost faith in the production almost immediately. And–as it frequently the case–it was all about Read the rest of this entry »
