The story: Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, relocates from a quiet country life to join a prestigious hospital’s surgical unit. Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues.

The Good Doctor series was developed by showrunner David Shore, based on the 2013 South Korean drama and executive produced Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0).

The 19th Annual NHMC Impact Awards in Pictures

On the red carpet and in the ballroom

On the red carpet and in the ballroom

I enjoy covering the annual National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) Impact Awards; I feel that their awards and awardees have merit compared to so many awards that seem to be based on popularity.

Bordertown is a new series created and written by Mark Hentemann (Family Guy-writer) and he’s executive producer along with Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy.

The series premieres Sunday, January 3 at 9:30P on FOX, voiced by the talents of Hank Azaria, Nicholas Gonzalez, Alex Borstein, Missi Pyle, and Judah Friedlander. Consulting producers include artist/political cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz (La Cucaracha) and editor/author Gustavo Arellano (¡Ask a Mexican!).

The comedy series explores family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink.

If the Raindrops United-Drawings and CartoonsBordertown centers on two clans: the Buckwalds and the Gonzalez’. Bud Buckwald is a married father of three and a Border Patrol agent who is just a tad behind the times and feels slightly threatened by the cultural changes transforming his neighborhood. He lives next door to Ernesto Gonzalez (Nicholas Gonzalez), an ambitious family man, who has been in the country less than 10 years, but is already doing better than Bud–which, it turns out, is a bit of an issue for Bud.

Yahoo TV’s Robert Chan and I got the opportunity to interview Hank Azaria (Bud Buckwald), we talked about his impressive voice career and what he enjoys the most. Then I had a great conversation with Judah Friedlander, the voice of Sanford Buckwald. We talked about his thoughts on his character and his newest project, a book, If the Raindrops United: Drawings and Cartoons.

Now kick back and listen in on the conversations.

Frank Grillo on “The Purge,” “Captain America,” and Being a Bad Ass

We all carry around a lot of preconceptions about actors–especially actors who make their biggest impressions playing iconic characters. That’s certainly the case with Frank Grillo; he’s been playing cops, criminals, and tough guys for close to twenty years, since Silk Stalkings and Minority Report, and these days he’s best remembered as playing Brock Rumlow (the future Crossbones) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now he’s about to make an even bigger impression as Sergeant in the sequel to The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy, an action/horror film with a big social message and a number in the mix, including Kiele Sanchez, Justina Machado, Nicholas Gonzalez, Carla Jimenez and Castulo Guerra, among others.

Se Fija! was part of a panel of journalists that got to sit down with Grillo a few days before the premiere of the picture, and we all got a pleasant surprise: not only was Grillo not the grim and scary guy we’ve seen in so many movies, he’s was actually funny, and a family man, and a professional who knew–and knows–exactly what he’s doing, why he’s doing it, and what he’s doing next. Here are just a few audio clips from our talk:

Grillo really does come from the old-school tradition of Bad Assery. What characters does he look to as historical precedents and inspiration?

Frank Grillo has a reputation–borne of hard work–that he’s a tough guy in real life as well as in film. But he’s the first to tell you that’s not entirely true.

And he’s aware of the opportunities his persona gives him…and its limitation. Read the rest of this entry »

Richard Montoya’s Poetic “Water & Power”

Richard Montoya, Wanda de Jesus, Se Fija!’s Angela Ortíz
and Emilio Rivera

By Angela Ortíz

Montoya is well known for being one third of the performance troupe, Culture Clash. They are well known for their satirical look at our society and Chicano culture. Now he’s completed his film, Water and Power.

Montoya is a constant writer, always working on his craft. He’s created everything from hundreds of comedic sketches to full-length plays and screenplays, under his own name and with his Culture Clash mates. Now Water & Power, written and directed by Montoya, is based on his play of the same name about twin brothers–yes, “Water” and “Power”–who were given those nick names by their father, and how those names guided their future.

“You might have to see the film a few times to get all the nuances that run through it. You also need to be up on your L.A. history…”

Created through a grueling but rewarding twelve-day shoot, this film isn’t for everyone; it has a specific audience in mind. It’s dark, gritty, and even funny at times. You might have to see the film a few times to get all the nuances that run through it. You also need to be up on your L.A. history. The film is not perfect but as a first-time film director Montoya manages to take you on a poetic ride.

There’s also some good acting in the feature, by Nicholas Gonzalez, Emilio Rivera, Clancy Brown and Enrique Murciano. And it’s worth mentioning that W&P boasts one of the largest Latino casts and crews in a very long time, including the late  and many more.

Check out the interview below with Montoya, Wanda de Jesus and Emilio Rivera.

Bottom line: she had a great time, and a series of great talks with some of Latino Hollywood’s brightest lights.

Listen in on her insider report:

“The NUVOtv event was great,” she said. “After I was done with the red carpet. I ran into lots of fun, familiar faces.

Gina Rodriguez introduced the show she’ll be hosting. Nu Point of View: The Emerging Latino Filmmakers (March 19, 8:30P). It’s a quarterly film showcase that gives talented writers, producers and directors to bring their passion projects to the national stage. The segment is three hours.

“I chatted with Jon Huertas about Castle, too. He really enjoys doing the show and is also doing live singing gigs around town with his band. We had a good laugh with Carlos Gómez, who guest stars on an upcoming episode of Castle, about who messed up the most on the shoot. Carlos won after he passed the 11th take.

Had a chance to talk to Nicholas Gonzalez. He will be back on Sleepy Hollow after the mid-season break; he just doesn’t know when yet. And he had some other “inside stories” I can’t begin to talk about.

“I even caught up with Justina Machado and E.J. Bonilla. I’m hoping we’ll be doing video interviews with both of them, and soon!

“Our buddy Grace Parra was wonderful and I did a video with her. She’ll be the traveling correspondent for the show and more. She hopes to be able to work in some of her rapping talent.”
