Saturday, December 7

No series with new material on Saturday–as usual–but the silken-voiced (and pretty damn classy in general) Elizabeth Peña is part of the ensemble in Disney’s animated superhero flick The Incredibles, 8P on Disney…and Nadine Velazquez, JD Pardo and Benjamin Bratt are all part of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s underrated attempted at gravitas in the thriller Snitch, 10P on Cinemax.

“Major Crimes” Returns with New Episodes, Right When We Need It Most

Cast of Major Crimes

There’s next to nothing new on cable right now, so the return of Raymond Cruz, Nadine Velazquez, and Jonathan del Arco is a welcome relief

Major Crimes, though only officially two years old, is already taken for granted. In fact, it’s a major wellspring for Latino talent, but all too often it’s overlooked for newer and flashier cop/crime shows up and down the dial.

L-r: Mary McDonnell, Nadine Velazquez, Raymond Cruz in Major Crimes

It’s not entirely surprising; as the sequel to the seven years of The Closer, it arrived with relatively little fanfare, and now–well into its second season–it continues to produce solid, smart, self-aware crime dramas on a regular basis. And certainly TNT isn’t do it (or us) any favors by slipping in new episodes at the weirdest possible times of the year…like now, a couple of days before Thanksgiving, on Monday nights at 9P.

Jonathan del Arco Major Crimes

But what’s to complain: you have Raymond Cruz as the quietly dangerous Detective Julio Sanchez, who’s been part of this show since the first days of The Closer. Now he’s joined by Nadine Velazquez, who’s proving herself to be just as tough as Deputy District Attorney Emma Rios, now entering the second half of her first season. And somewhere in between there’s the coroner, Dr. Morales, played by Jonathan del Arco, who’s recently moved from recurring character to regular. And Major Crimes, like its predecessor, has been home to a wide range of Latino guest stars over the years, as they pursue cases in a remarkably realistic Los Angeles (demographically real, anyway).

Kyra Sedgwick and J.K. Simmons may have moved along, but G.W. Bailey and Michael Paul Chen stuck around, and Mary McDonnell’s doing her best work since Battlestar Galactica. It’s well worth a view–especially at this time of year.

Happy Halloween! Share Some Scary Stories with Nadine Velazquez and Ana Ortiz

The stars of Devious Maids and Major Crimes share tales of terror on “Celebrity Ghost Stories”

What better time to gather around the flickering cathode ray tube for a chilling tale of horror and haunting? Here are two, courtesy of The Lifetime Movie Network’s Celebrity Ghost Stories. Recent episodes have included interviews, narrations, and reconstructions of Major Crimes’ Nadine Velazquez when she encountered something in her basement, and Ana Ortiz of Devious Maids relating the spooky story about a broken, battery-less boom box that suddenly began to play.

Enjoy them both here and here…and Happy Halloween!

Celebrate the Late Summer with Latinos on TV

Natalie Martinez (l) Under the Dome

Seven shows, from sci fi and fantasy to crime and family drama, showcase Latinos up and down the dial

We’ll only get to tell this happy tale for a couple of more weeks, but once again: some great performances and fascinating shows, all on one night:

Constance Marie is front and center in the season finale of ABC Family’s hit Switched at Birth. It’s already been renewed for another season.

Carlos Gómez and Kiele Sanchez strike sparks on The Glades, 9P on A&E.

L-r: Nadine Velazquez, Raymond Cruz, Tony Denison and Mary McDonnell in Major Crimes

Veterans Raymond Cruz and Jonathan del Arco and relative newcomer Nadine Velazquez, all playing tough and smart Latinos, are part of the action in Major Crimes at 9P on TNT. Also renewed for another season.

A Martinez just can’t stop being the sinister power behind it all in Longmire this season 10P on A&E (Walt won the election, but next week is the season finale, and it looks serious).

Tyler Posey can’t help but break a few hearts (after ripping them out of chests) in Teen Wolf, howling along at 10P on MTV.

Joyce Giraud may be stuck in a low-rated faux reality summer show, but she’s still a standout among forgettable in Siberia, staggering towards a conclusion at 10P on NBC.

Natalie Martinez continues to be one of the best and most unexpected things about the highest rated (and highest quality) network show of the summer, Under the Dome, 10P on CBS.

Another Mighty Monday for Latinos on TV

Matt Passmore and Carlos Gomez of The Glades

Seven shows, offering something for everyone (except comedy. What, we can’t be funny anymore?). Check out:

Constance Marie continues to offer up award-winning portrayals of a brave and complex character in Switched at Birth, 8P on ABC Family.

Carlos Gómez and Kiele Sanchez couldn’t be more fun if they tried on The Glades, 9P on A&E.

Natalie Martinez as the last and best cop standing in Under the Dome, 10P on CBS. Wonder if she’ll be part of UtD 2 next summer?

Joyce Giraud still hasn’t been voted off the island–’cause nobody can leave!–in the faux reality thriller Siberia, 10P on NBC.

A Martinez man may have lost the election, but the machinations in the Great North continue at 10P on A&E’s Longmire.

Could Tyler Posey be cuter? Don’t think so. See him in his often-undraped flesh in a new episode of Teen Wolf, 10P on MTV.

Thank God that the team didn’t disappear from TNT when The Closer did. In fact, it’s gotten even better for Latinos now, with Raymond Cruz, Nadine Velazquez, and Jonathan del Arco all part Major Crimes, 9P on TNT.

Latinos Keep Making Monday TV special: Five shows, Fourteen Latino Celebrities, All New

Matt Passmore and Carlos Gomez of The Glades

Yes, it’s getting redundant, but let’s enjoy it while we can: a ton of original episodes of some of your favorite series with Latinos front and center this Monday night:

Natalie Martinez is a huge hit in Under the Dome, still unreeling its weirdness at 10P on CBS.

Puerto Rican-born beauty Joyce Giraud may be the bad girl, but she’s a good bad girl in the faux reality-series thriller Siberia, 10P on NBC.

Carlos Gómez and Kiele Sanchez continue to make history and strike sparks as The Glades provides great “light mystery” entertain, 9P on A&E

A Martinez is the sinister power behind the throne on another excellent installment if Longmire, 10P on A&E. But hey…can we have the debate and the election, already? Time’s a’wastin’!

Constance Marie and her TV daughter participate in a “Deaf Day” in a new episode of Switched at Birth, 8P on ABC Family.

Alexandra Barreto in The Fosters

Cierra Ramirez, Jake T. Austin, Bianca A. Santos and Alexandra Barreto continue to be front-and-center in tonight’s episode of The Fosters, 9P on ABC Family.

Tyler Posey howls at the moon and breaks a few more hearts on Teen Wolf at 10P on MTV. (Is one of his co-stars, the other Tyler, really in the running to be the new Batman in the next movie? Really?)

One of the weirder episode summaries of the summer for Major Crimes this week: “A media frenzy begins when the body of a Latino man is found at the home of a swimming coach…” Oh, no! Not a Latino man! Could an alien autopsy be far behind? Find out with long-timers Raymond Cruz, Jonathan del Arco and relative newcomer (to the series, anyway) Nadine Velazquez in a new episode at 10P on TNT.

An abundance of entertainment. Top off the tank on the DVR and enjoy it while it lasts!

Yet Another Busy Monday Night for Latinos on TV

Cierra Ramirez

We’re in serious danger of repeating ourselves, but yet again: half a dozen first-run programs with Latinos front and center this Monday:

Constance Marie is just one of the many Latinas who should have been noticed by the Emmys. See her at work in Switched at Birth at 8P on ABC Family.

Cierra Ramirez and Jake T. Austin are quietly making history as twin Latino siblings in a blended family. Bianca A. Santos and Alexandra Barreto continue their arcs too. Keep up on The Fosters at 9P on ABC Family.

Natalie Martinez is one of the most impressive things in the pretty impressive Stephen King adaptation, Under the Dome, 10P on CBS.

Jonathan del Arco

Of course the Latina is the crazy traitor on the faux-reality-show-thriller Siberia. See the Puerto Rican beauty Joyce Giraud look sinister yet inscrutable at 10P on NBC.

Gang violence and racial profiling are the key issues on this week’s Major Crimes, where regular Raymond Cruz, Jonathan del Arco and Nadine Velazquez are joined by Orlando Chavez, Bernardo de Paula, Terence Edmonds, and young Xolo Maridueña of Parenthood at 9P on TNT.

Tyler Posey can’t help but look handsome and dangerous as the T.W. himself in Teen Wolf, 10P on MTV.

An Amazing Array: Nine New Programs on Monday with Latinos in the Mix on Network and Cable

Constance Marie Switched at Birth

It may be the strangest weekly schedule in recent years, but it seems as if everyone–broadcast and cable networks alike–is banking their original programming on a single night. It makes Mondays a rich resource of new materials for viewing, the rest of the week a bit of a wasteland, and a DVR essential.

Here’s the rundown:

Constance Marie continues her portrayal of a complex and brave single mother on Switched at Birth at 8P on ABC Family.

Carlos Gómez and Kiele Sanchez solve crimes and strike sparks on The Glades, 9P on A&E.

Cierra Ramirez and Jake T. Austin are twin siblings and proud Latinos along with Bianca A. Santos in the groundbreaking family drama, Jennifer LopezThe Fosters, 9P on ABC Family.

Raymond Cruz, Jonathan del Arco and Nadine Velazquez are still part of the team in Major Crimes, 9P on TNT.

A Martinez Longmire

Nicole Muñoz is a member of a ruling family and a bit of a wild one in the Season One finale of the post-alien-apocalypse Defiance, 9P on SyFy.

It’s only Episode Three, but Natalie Martinez is the last cop standing Under the Dome, 10P on CBS.

Joyce Giraud is one of the surviving “competitors” on the fake-reality-show-thriller Siberia, 10P on NBC.

A Martinez is a master political manipulator, at the center of the election for sheriff on Longmire, 10P on A&E.

Tyler Posey continues biting throats and breaking hearts on Teen Wolf, 10P on MTV.

Cable at its Best: Latinos Up Front on Seven Cable Shows with New Programming Monday Night

L-r: Nadine Velazquez, Raymond Cruz, Tony Denison and Mary McDonnell in Major Crimes

The best invention of the 21St century has to be the DVR. Otherwise we’d have a heck of a time catching all the Latino performances and characters that cable offers one on top of the other. So warm it up for:

Constance Marie on Switched at Birth at 8P on ABC Family

Carlos Gómez and Kiele Sanchez on The Glades at 9P on A&E

Cierra Ramirez, Jake T. Austin, Bianca A. Santos, Alexandra Barreto and more to come on Jennifer Lopez’ The Fosters at 9P on ABC Family

Nicole Muñoz on the alien-apocalypse political drama Defiance, 9P on SyFy

Raymond Cruz, Jonathan del Arco and Nadine Velazquez on Major Crimes, 9P on TNT

Tyler Posey breaking hearts and biting throats in MTV’s Teen Wolf, in a new episode at 10P

A Martinez in a continuing, powerful role on Longmire, 10P on A&E

The rest of the week is pretty thin–Fourth of July and all–but if you can find space on your recording machine, you can gather up a whole week’s worth of quality TV, complete with Latinos, in a single night. Enjoy!

Tyler Posey in “Teen Wolf,” Nicole Muñoz in “Defiance,” Raymond Cruz, Nadine Velazquez on “Major Crimes,” Carlos Gómez and Kiele Sanchez on “The Glades” Tonight

There are repeats of recent episodes at 8P and 9P and a brand new vulpine installment at 10P, all starring Latino cutie Tyler Posey and all on MTV; over on SciFi, there’s a recent repeat at 8P and an all-new episode of the alien apocalypse drama Defiance with Nicole Muñoz at 9P; and on TNT, you can watch last week’s and this week’ Major Crimes with Raymond Cruz, Nadine VelazquezJonathan del Arco with Elizabeth Peña and Luis Jose Lopez as guest stars at 8P and 9P respectively. Then Carlos Gómez and Kiele Sanchez quip and solve crimes on The Glades, 9P on A&E. Also on A&E, one of our favorite, Gina Rodriguez and Del Zamora guest star on a new episode of Longmire.
