Another Wonderfully Busy Night for Latinos on TV this Tuesday

Tonita Castro Dads

Everywhere you look, there are Latinos as regulars and guests this Tuesday night:

Daniella Pineda is a witch in a city of vampires–and there are plenty of beautiful vampires to be seen–in The Originals at 8P on the CW.

Tonita Castro is the housekeeper you always with you had on Dads, 9P on Fox.

Stephanie Biatriz and Melissa Fumero are the Latina cops you want to answer your call for help on Brooklyn Nine Nine at 8:30P on Fox.

Natalie Morales Trophy Wife

Miguel Ferrer grumbles with authority on NCIS: Los Angeles at 9P on CBS.

Christina Aguilera judges and mentors more and more on The Voice, as the battles begin at 9P.

Nina Lisandrello as Detective Tess Vargas in Beauty and the Beast on the CW at 9p.

Natalie Morales is still the worst best friend on TV in Trophy Wife at 9:30P on ABC.

Sarah Shahi is never been more dangerous (or beautiful) as she is in this season of Person of Interest. Catch a new episode at 10P on CBS.

Joe Minoso and Monica Raymund save lives and break hearts–as always–And Jon Seda continues his arc on Chicago Fire, 10P on NBC.

Eight Shows, Eight-Plus Latinos on Tuesday TV

Marcos De La Cruz

Tuesday continues to be the big winner for Latino TV this season:

Tonita Castro is the housekeeper you don’t want to mess with on Dads, 8P on Fox

Christina Aguilera continues to shape new musical careers as the Judge in Chief on The Voice, 8P on NBC.

Daniella Pineda is one of The Originals, the long-lived big bad vampires of Vampire Diaries, now in their own show at 8P on the CW.

Stephanie Beatriz and Melissa Fumero are tougher than any of the men in Brooklyn Nine Nine, Andy Samberg’s quirky cop comedy at 8:30 on Fox.

Joe Minoso

Miguel Ferrer is joined by guest Marcos De La Cruz in a new episode of NCIS: Los Angeles at 9P on CBS (and no, we didn’t forget: Cote de Pablo is done and done in the parent show, NCIS).

Nina Lisandrello as Detective Tess Vargas in Beauty and the Beast on the CW at 9p.

Natalie Morales is still the worst best friend ever in Trophy Wife, 9:30 on ABC.

Sarah Shahi is still assassinating for fun, and joined by guest star Antonio Edwards Suarez, in a new episode of Person of Interest, 10P on CBS.

Monica Raymund and Joe Minoso keep insisting on savings lives while looking gorgeous on Chicago Fire, 10P on NBC.

Too Much to Cover: Latinos All Over the Dial on Tuesday

Leonor Varela

Stars, regular cast members, guests and more: ten shows, one contest, and a documentary all on one night, and all with Latinos in mind

It’s amazing how deeply involved Latino Hollywood is on Tuesday nights this TV season. Here’s the dizzying watch list for the night:

S.H.I.E.L.D., perhaps the biggest success of the new season so far, packs up and goes to Peru, and though there are no Latinos as regular cast members (yet), the guests for this episode include Leonor Varela, Carlos Leal, Anthony Dilio, and Celestin Cornielle. See just how super it is at 8P on ABC

Cote de Pablo’s Ziva is still with us–temporarily!–on NCIS at 8P.

Cote de Pablo

Christina Aguilera returns for The Voice’s second show of the week at 8P on NBC.

Tonita Castro runs the apartment (and the lives) of Dads, 8P on Fox.

The remarkable documentary Latino Americans concludes its series with “Prejudice and Pride, Peril and Promise” at 8P on PBS.

Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz may be the two sanest people (alongside Andre Braugher) on Andy Samberg’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but everybody’s still fun as hell. Sample it at 8:30P on Fox.

Miguel Ferrer calls the shots (or at least he thinks he does) on NCIS: Los Angeles, 9P on CBS.

Natalie Morales

Natalie Morales is the worst best friend ever in Trophy Wife, 9:30P on ABC.

A news crew profiles the lottery winners, including Luis Antonio Ramos and Alex Castillo, Lucky 7 at 10P on ABC.

Sarah Shahi manages the impossible of being in two places–and being two people–at once. First, she’s the gleefully murderous no member of the Machine Team on Person of Interest, 10P on CBS…

…and then Sarah joins Monica Raymund and Jon Seda in Chicago Fire, also at 10P, but over on NBC.

Tuesday Night is the Night for Latinos on TV this Fall

Cote de Pablo

Fifteen series premiere or re-premiere on network TV this Tuesday…and nine of them have Latinos in starring or continuing roles

It’s an interesting mix, and unintended snapshot of Latinos progress in Hollywood. Latinas return in prominent roles in two of television’s most popular shows (one of whom is just returning, the other of whom is about to leave forever)…three more are expanding the roles of Latinos in their large existing casts…and two more are brand new, with Latinos in key positions. So: returning, growing, and brand new, on three out of four networks.

Most interesting of all is CBS, where–for the moment at least, and for the first time in a long time, if ever–there are Latinos in prominent positions on every prime time show of the night. Here’s the schedule…and the reason you need to make sure that your DVR is warmed up and read:

Tonita Castro Dads

Cote de Pablo begins her tragically short run on NCIS, as we all try to prepare for her permanent departure, at 8P on CBS.

Christina Aguilera continues to reign over The Voice, at 8P on NBC.

Tonita Castro is on Fox’s Dads at 8P, where she gets to run the bachelor pad.

Stephanie Biatriz and Melissa Fumero return in the second episode of Andy Samberg’s surprisingly funny cop-comedy, Brooklyn Nine Nine, 8:30P on Fox. Read more about Brooklyn Nine Nine here.

Miguel Ferrer moves from recurring characters to a regular member of the cast of NCIS: LA (even though his other show, NCIS: Red Team didn’t make the cut.) See if it makes him any less grumpy at 9P on CBS.

Natalie Morales is the most clueless best friend on Trophy Wife, officially premiering in its regular time slot of 9:30P on ABC.

Our buddy Luis Antonio Ramos (read more about Luis here) and Alex Castillo are two of the lucky winners of the lottery in Lucky 7…but it’s not all champagne and caviar. Check it out at 10P on ABC. You can learn more about the show here, and even catch chef Mario Batali interview Luis and other members of the cast.

Sarah Shahi was an intriguing, mysterious, and surprisingly deadpan assassin for hire in some of last season’s best episodes of Person of Interest. Now she’s a good guy and a regular member of the cast, beginning at 10P on CBS. Even better, Diane Guerrero (Orange is the New Black) guest stars.

Monica Raymund, Jon Seda, and Joe Minoso are putting out fires and breaking hearts as usual, as Chicago Fire returns for a whole new sets of emergencies, 10P on NBC. (That means there are Latinos in regular rolls on all three networks with ten o’clock programming Tuesday nights!)

Thursday night is almost as strong, but Tuesday is a great opportunity to see Latinos–often playing positive roles as Latinos–all over the dial, all season long (we hope!).

Stephanie Biatriz is the Toughest Thing About “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

Stephanie Beatriz

Melissa Fumero

There’s a new extended trailer for FOX’s new cop-comedy, Brooklyn Nine Nine, and it’s actually pretty funny. Andy Samberg is as inappropriate as ever, Andre Braugher offers the best deadpan in television today (from submarine captain to precinct captain in less than a year!), and Stephanie Beatriz, last seen as Sofía Vergara’s weepy and homicidal sister on Modern Family, plays the toughest cop of any gender or ethnicity–Rosa Diaz. (A name change from the pilot, where her character was known as Meghan. No question now: this girl’s one dangerous Latina). And there’s a second Latino character in the show: Melissa Gallo Fumero, best known for her work on One Life to Live, plays Amy Santiago, Samberg’s long-suffering partner.

It looks to be a funny show, and Biatriz is a major part of it. Here’s the extended trailer:

Melissa Fumero: from “One Life to Live” to Fox Comedy Pilot

Soap operas–whether they’re produced in the U.S. or far to the south–are a proven gateway for actors of all ethnicities, and Cuban-American actress Melissa Fumero is no exception. She had a long and successful stint on One Life to Live–so successful she ended up marrying her co-star (and on-screen cousin!) David Fumero. In fact, they just celebrated their fifth anniversary.

Melissa left OLTL a while back; she’s had guest-starring role in Royal Pains and CSI:NY since. And now she’s been cast opposite Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg in the new Fox comedy pilot for the writers who’ve given us some of the best of Parks and Recreation, Conan, and The Daily Show. The untitled show “revolves around a diverse group of detectives in a precinct at the very edge of New York City,” and Fumero will play Amy, a former middle school teacher. That’s her “hidden super-power: compared to sixth-graders, real life criminals are a piece of cake. When it comes to dating, she doesn’t date cops, though not for lack of opportunities”

A pilot’s just a pilot, and the networks are making a ton this season. It’s also not clear if Melissa’s character is Latino or not…but it’s a great opportunity for her, and a long leap from One Life to Live. We’ll keep you informed.
