This weekend on “American Latino”…Francia Raisa!
Francia Raisa in “Bring it On: All or Nothing” twice this weekend on ABC Family
With The Secret Life of the American Teenager gone for good, we have to get our looks at Francia Raisa when we can…and at least ABC Family is cooperating, with two showings of Bring It On: All or Nothing this weekend: Saturday November 17 at 10:30A and Sunday November 18 at 12:00A.
ABC Family Cancels “Secret Life of the American Teenager”
Actually, it was a pretty good run: ABC Family premiered The Secret Life of the American Teenager in July of 2008, and a total of 121 will be broadcast before the show bids farewell, but still, the bad news: ABC Family has cancelled the family drama, costarring Francia Raisa, Philip Anthony-Rodriguez, and Paola Turbay. The final twelve episodes, which will begin airing in March 2013, are all we’ll see of Season Five.
Secret Life was created by Brenda Hampton, who also created the CW’s Seventh Heaven, the launching pad for Jessica Biel. It looks like Francia could enjoy a similar trajectory; she already has starring roles in Cutting Edge and Bring It On sequels under her belt, she recently completed a guest-starring role on CSI, and has two films already in the can: a comedy-horror flick called Chastity Bites, where she co-stars with Warehouse 13’s Allison Scagliotti, and an intercultural love story called Birds of Paradise, with Step Up Revolution’s Ryan Guzman and Daphne Zuniga. Both will be released in the next few months, in and around the time the last Secret Life episodes hit the air. Meanwhile, Turbay has had a recurring role as a doctor on Royal Pains for the past few seasons along with being on The Secret Life. Read the rest of this entry »
Latino Hollywood Hidden Oasis: Cable TV
We spend a whole lot of time–maybe too much–monitoring the ups and down, comings and goings of Latinos on network TV, when in truth there are a great many Latino entertainers working every week, in front of millions of viewers, all year round:
Cable TV is taking over the world. We’re just not paying enough attention.
This week is emblematic of how much is happening at what was once called “the lower end of the dial.” But there’s nothing “lower” about it anymore, especially in this age of TiVo and timeshifting. Check it out: in the last few days alone:
- Royal Pains had its season premiere on USA
- Hot in Cleveland had its season finale on TVLand
- Necessary Roughness had its season premiere on USA
- Happily Divorced has its season finale on TVLand
- Fast n Loud premiered on Discovery
- Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America premiered on The Travel Channel
- Million Dollar Listing had its season premiere on Bravo
…and other reality shows premiered on CMT and truTV. In a single day.
Not all of those are Latino-involved (though Rita Moreno continues to be the funniest thing about Happily Divorced, and you’ll see Latino guest starts like Adam Rodriguez and Alexa Vega on Necessary Roughness and Royal Pains coming up in the next few weeks), but the point is there is tons of activity on cable in general, unrelated to the programming on the Big Three and Little Two. And at this point, what with migration away from the broadcast nets (and often from TV in general), the numbers that some of cable’s more popular shows are generating meet and even exceed the viewership for some CW and FOX shows, especially in key demographics.
In short: Cable is a force to be reckoned with, and Latinos are a major part of the movement.
Almost Three Million Watch the ALMAs (and you still can!)
The ALMAs performed solidly for NBC last Friday, winning the time-slot’s coveted 18-49 demo and ushering in a two-hour block of Dateline: NBC that gave the network the win for the night. 2.9 million sets of eyeballs watched the show (more than watched anything on FOX or CW that night). Not a bad performance for a barely-promoted program sentenced to the double-graveyard of the late-summer, pre-season August or 8P any Friday night this year. Hopefully impressive enough for NBC to bring it back next year, bigger (and better-promoted) than ever.
And you can still catch the entire show online, right here on NBC.com. Enjoy!

Francia Raisa makes a mark on “Teenager,” at the ALMAs, and more
Let’s be honest: being the daughter of the radio sensation El Cucuy (Renan Almendarez Coello) probably had something to do with Francia Raisa getting noticed at an early age. But that’s all it did: get her noticed. Once she got her shot, it was up to Francia to prove herself just like anybody else–and then it was the tiny matter of being talented, beautiful, and utterly convincing in front of the camera that put her in such the powerful and positive position she enjoys today.
Season Four of The Secret Life of the American Teenager has its Summer Finale Monday, Sept. 5 at 8P on ABC Family, but there’s little doubt it will be back.
It continues to be the most popular Read the rest of this entry »
