Yul Vázquez, Dominik Garcia-Lorido Return to “Magic City” for a Second Season

It was (and is) a promising premise: a dark drama set in 1950’s Miami, when things between Cuba and U.S. were at their craziest, and the mob was struggling to establish its own power base. And Magic City has some powerful players in the mix, including Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Danny Huston and Yul Vázquez. It appeared just about a year ago on the Starz network with considerable fanfare…

…and pretty much faded from the front page almost immediately.

Dominik Garcia-Lorido

It didn’t make quite the Mad Men/Dexter splash they had hoped for when it appeared, but no matter: Yul, Dominik Garcia-Lorido and a small Florida tidal wave of international talent is flowing back to Miami for a second round, beginning at 9P on Starz this Friday June 14. And they’re upping the ante this season, with two new Latino cast members: Esai Morales as Carlos “El Tiburon” Ruiz, a Cuban exile, and Shalim Ortiz, son of Spanish television personality Charytin as a Cuban sugar heir who falls for Garcia-Lorido. Better watch himself: Yul Vázquez plays her father.

It’s as stylish, violent, and foul-mouthed as ever–don’t you love cable?–and it begins this Friday at 9P. Check out the new season’s trailer from earlier this year, click on image below:

Finally! “Gun Hill Road” available on DVD, Tuesday March 5

We’ve been a big fan of Gun Hill Road since it premiered in 2011. This challenging and deeply felt drama from writer/director Rashaad Ernesto Green about life after prison, fatherhood, and sexual identity had a huge effect on everyone that saw it…but not nearly enough people have seen it. And stars Esai Morales, Judy Reyes, and the amazing Harmony Santana did their best to drum up interest, but it’s been virtually invisible for months–no streaming, no Netflix, no DVD. Now, at least, it will be available for sale. And maybe it can get a tiny amount of the attention it deserves.

Elizabeth Peña is Sofía Vergara’s Mother

…but she’s far too young and beautiful to pull it off.

Elizabeth Peña deserves to be a living legend.

We first started seeing her in classic 80’s TV, like Cagney and Lacey and T.J. Hooker. She had her first regular role as a cop–the first of many–in the short-lived series Tough Cookies in ’86. She comes by it honestly; her dad was a theater owner in New York; she went to the High School of Performing arts with the likes of Ving Rhames and Esai Morales. She was in La Bamba, and Jacob’s Ladder and Blue Steel. She even had her own series for a year in the late Eighties: I Married Dora. Read the rest of this entry »

Esai Morales to Join “Magic City” in Season Two

Magic City, the mob drama set in a Miami casino in the rough-and-tumble, pre-Castro 1960s, hasn’t set the world on fire so far…but it was granted a second season, and the show will be stacking the deck with some new powerhouse stars, including James Caan and Esai Morales. Morales, perhaps best remembered recently for ABC’s NYPD Blue and SyFy’s Caprica, as recent appearances on USA’s Fairly Legal with Sarah Shahi, will play Carlos Ruiz, “a former Castro loyalist who now works to free Cuba from the man he formerly considered family.” It will be a recurring role through the 2013 season.
