Demián Bichir of “A Better Life” nominated for SAG Award

Sofia Vergara nominated for Best Actress in a TV Comedy; Latinos in 3 of the 5 Comedy Ensembles, 2 out of 5 Drama Ensembles

The Screen Actors Guild has just announced its nominations for the SAG Awards 2012–widely thought to be a predictor of the Oscars–and the biggest (and best) surprise of the lot is Demián Bichir, nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a leading role for the independent film A Better Life. Se Fija! Had a chance to film Chris Weitz in a discussion of A Better Life at a recent event held by TheWrap.com; you can see the Q&A here. And Argentinean Bérénice Bejo nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in The Artist. We’ve just added a post about the sometimes-overlooked treasure that is Dexter; you can read it here. Dexter: Still the Strongest Latino Roles and Plot Lines on TV Today

As the newest season of Showtime’s Dexter winds to a close (the season finale is coming up on Sunday, December 18), it’s worth noting–once again–that this bizarre little series on the far side of the cable TV firewall is the home of some of the most amazing, effective, and powerful Latino acting on anywhere on the tube.

Since the very beginning, we’ve seen David Zayas and Lauren Vélez turn in disturbingly passionate performances week after week, as troubled cops, lovers, spouses, and now enemies. And in previous years, we’ve seen equally awesome work by other Latinos, most notably Jimmy Smits as a crusading D.A. who ultimately loses control and makes Dexter himself look like a normal guy. Christian Camargo, Valerie Cruz, April L. Hernandez, Jesse Borrego, Jason Manuel Olazabel, and Pablo Soriano have all contributed multi-episode arcs of their own, portraying characters on both sides of the law, and we’re not even including one- or two-episode victims, witnesses, and innocent bystanders. “Dexter” and five more TV shows with Latinos premiere in October

It’s about time! We’ve been waiting to see what Dexter’s going to do now that (SPOILER! CENSORED!), and now the time has come: Dexter–along with the fiery and now finished couple, Lauren Vélez and David Zayas—is back with a new season, beginning Sunday 10/2 at 9P on Showtime. And this season Aimee Garcia and Edward James Olmos are joining the cast; in roles they’re not supposed to talk about (that’s the joy and frustration of Dexter, Read the rest of this entry »

Valerie Cruz has had kind of a weird career…and it’s just getting weirder

You’ve seen her before–plenty. She first got noticed almost eight years ago, in FX’s strangely wonderful plastic surgery series Nip/Tuck, and she’s been keeping busy ever since, with guest shots in every quality hour-long drama you can think of, as well as extended arcs or full seasons in SyFy’s The Dresden Files, HBO’s Dexter and True Blood, and most recently as one of the overly dedicated doctor in ABC’s ill-fated Off The Map. And she’s kept busy on the movie side as well, with a steady stream of strong independents like The Line with Andy Garcia, The Devil’s Tomb with Ron Pearlman, and the upcoming Loft opposite James Marsden.

Notice the weirdness: a SyFy series about urban magic, a season as a modern-day vampire on True Blood, Read the rest of this entry »

Almost Three Million Watch the ALMAs (and you still can!)

The ALMAs performed solidly for NBC last Friday, winning the time-slot’s coveted 18-49 demo and ushering in a two-hour block of Dateline: NBC that gave the network the win for the night. 2.9 million sets of eyeballs watched the show (more than watched anything on FOX or CW that night). Not a bad performance for a barely-promoted program sentenced to the double-graveyard of the late-summer, pre-season August or 8P any Friday night this year. Hopefully impressive enough for NBC to bring it back next year, bigger (and better-promoted) than ever.

And you can still catch the entire show online, right here on NBC.com. Enjoy!

David Zayas Talks About the next season of “Dexter,” Lauren Velez, Aimee Garcia and More

There was a lot going on at the San Diego Comic Con this year, and most of it was caught on film by somebody or other. The smart folks over at BuzzFocus got a five-minute sit-down with David Zayas of Dexter and got some great stuff about the next season, as well as his character’s relationship with Lauren Velez this year, and the arrival if Aimee Garcia as his sister and the nanny for Dexter’s newly motherless child.

Zayas also reminds us of something often forgotten: before he began his successful acting career, Zayas was an actual beat cop in Manhattan. This explains, at least a little, his ultra-realistic confidence playing a police detective to go along with the intensity and intelligence he’s displayed since Season One–a performance that, along with Velez’ equally impressive Read the rest of this entry »

The Alma Award Nominations: A Glitzy Trip Through a Familiar Neighborhood

Every awards show has its own personality. Some are young and flashy; some are dignified and a little intimidating; some are earnest, some are giddy. And some are hauntingly familiar, like that guy you met during that thing in that place–that guy who is just so familiar.

That’s the sense you get from looking down the list of this year’s Alma Awards: almost all the names, all the TV series and movies are comfortable and familiar. No surprises. Very little that’s new. And that, in it self, tells us something. This time it tells us that there are a whole lot of Latinos in front of the camera, and that’s good. But it Read the rest of this entry »
