We got to sit down with Lowriders’ director Ricardo de Montreuil and two of its actors, Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy, Luke Cage) and Gabriel Chavarria (East Los High). We talked about the making of the film and the folks who made it happen, like producer Brian Grazer.

Talking to director Montreuil, we found out about their four-week shooting schedule and how they ended up with the Lowriders title. I enjoyed listening to Theo Rossi’s description of being a “blue color actor.” Watch the video below for his full explanation. I am very proud to see Gabriel Chavarria’s growing career blossom.

The film Lowriders has so much more going for it than the title suggests. It’s in the same vein as A Better Life, and it shows another slice of the Los Angeles stories. I thought the mood and the music chosen for this film were on point.

Guardians Vol 2 in 4DX

Groot, 4DX Cinepolis Theater, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

By Gabriel Rodriguez (@GeeRodreezy)

This review is on the 4DX Cinepolis Theater for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Upon entering the theater, you can immediately tell that it’s a new and premium experience. It actually smells like new car, which was incredible!

The seats are set up in rows of four, because each set moves together rather than having each individual seat move. That wouldn’t work; they would hit each other. I would say the only drawback to this is if you have someone that moves a lot in your four-seat section, then you will feel every movement they make. Otherwise, they’re great seats. Each seat has a foot rest-type attachment so that your feet don’t touch the ground and a button to turn water effects on or off (in case you’re not into having a complete experience, I guess).

You may think that this experience is going to be nonstop moving and vibrating, or a recipe for motion sickness, but thankfully it’s not. While the seat vibration does take a bit of getting used to (maybe 15 minutes), it does not deter from the experience at all, and the most intense motions will only come during big action scenes. Otherwise there are smooth seat transitions, such as the seat tilting back when a ship is taking off. Along with the movement there are smells and sounds unique to each film. Fans blow at the rear of the theater to create a wind and noise environment, as if you were in the movie itself, as well as short bursts of air next to your ear to simulate gun fire or fast moving objects. All of this along with the smells of fire and forest that engulf the theater during moments in the film, fully immersing the viewer in the movie’s universe.

While this may not be the experience you want for every movie, this is definitely something you want to do for big action movies or those in which you want to feel more engaged with the film. Overall, this is an experience I will not forget and will most definitely try again.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is just fun to get lost in. I liked the storyline for the most part and enjoyed the back and forth between the characters.

I noticed there’s more music in this movie and it’s music that I enjoy and that was fine with me.

The one weakness in the film for me was Sylvester Stallone’s performance; I couldn’t understand him at times.

Now check out a few videos from the press conference below, watch the trailer and listen to director James Gunn talk about watching the film as a 4DX experience.

They saved the galaxy once. Now they are trying for a second time: Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoë Saldaña), Drax (Dave Bautista), Baby Groot (Vin Diesel-voice), Rocket (Bradley Cooper-voice), Yondu (Michael Rooker), and Nebula (Karen Gillen).

Now that they have the father issue behind them, we can move on to Guardians 3. Meanwhile, 2 is in theaters May 5, in RealD 3D and IMAX 3D.

All in all, GUARDIANS Rules!

Cinco de Mayo, Good Food and Movies

GOYA products approached us again for a fun cooking post for Cinco de Mayo. And I said of course we’ll do it!

I’ve said before, I’m not a trained cook, but my love for cooking is strong. And fixing a dish for Cinco de Mayo would be fun.GOYA Logo

Cinco de Mayo means many different things to many people. Here in the U.S.A. it’s about parties and drinking—and I don’t have a problem with that, except that I like to think more about the reason behind the day. To me, it’s a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican Army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). It is not a huge holiday in Mexico, but over the years it has become a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage in the U.S.A.

Adding some mole flavors to the carne–ground turkey and pork with seasonings.

Now with the history of Cinco de Mayo behind us, I’ve chosen a dish that has flavors of a mole that’s fun to share with family and friends. To do a real mole, it takes time to prep and cook slowly. My quick version from start to serving takes roughly three hours. As most cooks know, the prep portion sometimes take more time than the actual cooking.

In this dish I used ground turkey and pork with Goya’s seasonings (garlic, comino, oregano), salt and pepper. I melted down some chocolate with 75% and 90% cacao with chili flakes and cayenne pepper, while Goya’s chile ancho soaked in some hot water.

In a sauté pan I had some leeks going and in the blender there were whole roasted tomatoes waiting for the chile anchos to join them with a little lime juice and añejo tequila.

The final dishes

The chopped almonds, sesame seeds and leeks are mixed into meat (see photos). At the end, I ended up with two tasty dishes: carne over leftover mac and cheese, and two tostadas with Goya’s refried black beans, plain yogurt (or sour cream), and meat. Both were garnished with Jicama, limejuice, queso fresco, and a little paprika. For dessert, pumpkin ice cream.

I also thought it would be fun to suggest a few films to enjoy for the day or evening.

Here’s the list:

As a sentimental favorite, it would be nice to watch the original 1931 Spanish-language version of Drácula, starring Mexican actress Lupita Tovar–the same Lupita Tovar who starred in Santa, Mexico’s first talkie, eighty-five years ago. She was actress Susan Kohner’s mother and grandmother to filmmakers Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz. Tovar passed on November 12, 2016 at the age of 106. — A.O.
