The “Wizards” Are Back Tonight!

Selena Gomez, Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera, David DeLuise return in The Wizards of Waverly Place: Alex vs Alex tonight at 8P on the Disney Channel. We wrote about here and here.

Latinos in Some Strange and Challenging Films in Theaters

We’ve talked about some of these films already (see below), but some are new…and all in all, this Friday offers a great illustration of just how wide and deep the Latino presence is in Hollywood these days. Here on the Ides of March:

Spanish director Pablo Berger’s beautiful and bizarre retelling of Show White, Blancanieves, enjoys a limited opening.

Kate del Castillo plays a slightly insane transsexual convict in the extremely strange K-11.

Selena Gomez moves to the adult table in a strange and sexy film Spring Breakers, directed by Harmony Korine.

Breakout indie star (from Parks & Recreation to Safety Not Guarranted) Aubrey Plaza is one of the voices in Goro Miyasaki’s newest masterpiece, Up from Poppy Hill.

Oscar Nuñez (The Office) is part of the ensemble in a new rom com, Language of a Broken Heart, opening in L.A.

Argentine director Juan Diego Solanas, the son of famed Argentine director Fernando E. Solanas, premieres an off-kilter science fiction film, Upside Down, starring Kirsten Dunst.

The Girl, directed by David Riker, writer/director of La CiudadThe film–nominated for Best Narrative film at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival—the cast includes Will PattonAbbie CornishMaritza SantiagoGiovanna ZacaríasRaúl CastilloLuci Christian and Austin West—opens in a limited release. We spoke about it here.

All strange…and all true!

“The Snow White of Spain” Opens in America this Friday

We usually stick to U.S. Latino productions, but sometimes a piece of work from “the old country” is so beautiful you just can’t pass it up. That’s certainly the case with Blancanieves, written and directed by Pablo Berger and starring Maribel Verdú, Ángela Molina, Daniel Giménez Cacho. This multi-award-winning black-and-white fantasy has been making a huge impact on the film festival circuit for a couple of years now; on Friday March 15 it begins a limited theatrical run.

This re-telling of Snow White is set in a romanticized 1920s Seville. Snow White is the daughter of a famous bull fighter, who lives under the tyrannical rule of her evil stepmother (they’re timeless!) and escapes to join a troupe of bullfighting dwarves–no, really–where “her beauty and natural talent in the ring attract notices from the press.” But soon the news reaches E.S.M., who wastes no time in coming after her.

Bullfighting dwarves notwithstanding, this is a beautiful film and strangely hypnotic. Take a look at the trailer below.

“Last Man Standing,” “Malibu Country” and Latino Guests on “Blue Bloods” All New this Friday

ABC keeps’ crankin’ out new adventures of Hector Elizondo on Last Man Standing at 9P and Jai Rodriguez at 8:30 on Malibu Country, while Marisa Ramirez, Raul Castillo, and Robert Montano are among the sprawling cast of guest starts on Blue Bloods at 10P on CBS.

New “Vampire’s,” “Gray’s,” “Office,” “Beauty” and “Glee” this Thursday

It’s about 50/50 new to rerun ratio tonight, but that’s still much better than nothing, with Michael Trevino on a new Vampire Diaries at 8P on the CW. While Nina Lisandrello continues on Beauty and the Beast at 9P, also on the CW. Then Sara Ramirez in Gray’s Anatomy at 9P on ABC, opposite one of the last new episodes of The Office with Oscar Nuñez on NBC and Lea Michele, Naya Rivera and Blake Jenner on Glee, at the same time on FOX. Over on FX, Daniela Bobadilla and Martin Sheen on Charlie Sheen’s sitcom Anger Management at 9:30P. Warm up those DVR’s!

Jon Huertas Gets All Mushy and Generous in his New “Castle”-centric Music Video

Jon Huertas

If you didn’t already know (and we’ve mentioned it before!) Jon Huertas of ABC’s Castle can sing. He’s recorded songs and released music videos before, and every time people are surprised at just how smooth, accomplished, and downright sexy he is. (We’re not.)

Now Jon’s released a new song and video that’s not only very cool, but a tribute to the ongoing “Casket” romance that’s at the center of Castle itself: the finally-consummated relationship between Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic). The video’s an affectionate set of clips that take us from their first meeting to the current hot-and-heavy love affair, as Jon serenades them both.

Pretty nice. And, he tells us, this is all part of a contest, that “will follow soon.” If you win, he says, “I fly u out, put u up & front row at a live performance.”

What more could anybody want? Check this out:

Rita Moreno on “The Talk” Thursday Morning

Wherever she goes, we will follow: the legendary Rita Moreno sits down with The Gals on The Talk, Thursday morning on CBS at 2P ET and 1P PT/CT.

Danny Pino, Forgotten Treasure

It’s easy to underestimate Danny Pino. Smart, handsome, soft-spoken (at least in his roles), he laid down more that 150 episodes of Cold Case–look at that again, 150–before the show went south in 2010, and almost before you knew it another incarnation of his calm and careful cop showed up on the casting merry-go-round that is Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, gradually taking the place of departing Christopher Meloni. Now he’s edging up towards fifty of those episodes, playing Detective Nick Amaro, and somehow or other he gets overlooked, often as not, when you see the short list of Latinos playing good-guy characters on TV–which he’s done, week in and week out, for the better part of ten years. (He’s been nominated for an Alma Award three times–never won–and for three Imagen Awards, with one win for his SVU work. The other five noms were for Cold Case and…no love.)

So here’s to Danny…and here’s a short interview with him from NBC.com about his character on Law & Order: SVU, click here.

Shhh! Everything’s a Rerun this Wednesday

It’s usually a great night for Latinos in front of the camera…but this week, virtually every Latinocentric show on the nets is a repeat, from Modern Family to SVU and Chicago Fire. But Maximiliano Hernández is still part of The Americans at 10P on FX, over on TNT we have Roxana Brusso continuing her arc on Southland at 10P and Alex Enriquez guests on the James Roday much-missed Psych, 10P on USA. And you could always watch Alfred Molina in one of his first American roles in the SF action pic Species, 9P on BBC America…

More New “Golden Boy” and “Second Generation” on Tuesday

It was supposed to move to Friday night, but CBS seems happier with Kevin Alejandro and the rest of the cast right here on Tuesday at 10P—Andrea Navedo and Joshua Torrez guest star. So the NCIS’s may be repeats this week, but there’s still something new to see. And don’t miss Tatyana Ali in a new episode of Second Generation at 10:30P on BET.
