Latinos Empowered “The Croods” from Behind the Scenes

There are no Latino voices in the new prehistoric animated comedy The Croods, a modest new hit from DreamWorks Animation…but behind the camera, Latino animation professionals like William Arias and Louis Flores are making the movie happen.

Arias is the Lead Lighter on Croods. He’s been with Dreamworks for more than half a decade, and worked in the same capacity on Madagascar 3, Puss In Boots, MegaMind and more. Flores served as Visual Effects Lead; he’s been in the field since the turn of the century, and his leadership position is well-established, including similar credits on the Kung Fu Panda series, Monsters vs Aliens, and How to Train Your Dragon, among many others. Both of them appeared at a special Para Los Niños event last week, where they showed clips from the film and spoke to kids from kindergarten to 6thgrade about the jobs they have and the careers they’ve chosen.

“The at-risk students, who come from low-income backgrounds, interacted with them and talked about the hard work that they had to endure to get to where they are at,” the Dreamworks release told us. “William and Louis instilled in them the value of a good education, hard work and the perseverance that it takes to be a successful person.” And–not so subtly–showed them that Latinos and people of color in general have carved a permanent niche in the production and animation niches of Hollywood as well, from camera people to editing to sound…and animation.

The Croods is a 3D comedy adventure that follows the world’s first modern family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always been their home, is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the Croods are rocked by generational clashes and seismic shifts as they discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures—and their outlook is changed forever. The cast includes Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke, and Cloris Leachman.

“Dallas,” “Monday Mornings,” “Bates Hotel” and “Secret Life” New on Cable Mondays

Francia Raisa is still part of the fifth and final season of Secret Life of the American Teenager, with a new episode on Monday at 8P ABC Family. Then Jordana Brewster and many others shine on Cynthia Cidre’s reboot of Dallas at 9P on TNT, followed at 10P by Alfred Molina on the new medical drama Monday Mornings. Also at 10P, Nestor Carbonell plays the creepiest sheriff ever on A&E’s Bates Hotel. Check it out…if you dare.

“The Voice” and “Revolution” Return, “Castle” and “The Following” Keep Coming on Monday

Christina Aguilera is off on tour for this round of the voice, but Shakira is taking her place as the requisite beautiful Latina singer on The Voice, 8P on NBC, followed by the return of the “soft apocalypse” curiosity Revolution at 10P, with Daniella Alonso and JD Pardo in primary positions. Meanwhile, Jon Huertas is visible on a new Castle, with Benito Martinez and Jeremy Ray Valdez as guest stars at 10P on ABC, and Adan Canto’s character had a bad ending in last week’s episode(?) and David Zayas guest stars on The Following, 9P on Fox.

Viggo Mortensen: Hollywood Should Stop Ignoring Spanish-Language films

Viggo Mortensen recently starred in a film from Argentina, Everybody Has a Plan. It recently debuted in Los Angeles and New York, but other than it, it’s likely to sink without a trace (theatrically speaking). And Viggo thinks that’s a shame.

In the film, Mortensen plays two Argentine brothers–a doctor and a beekeper–who get themselves and each other into trouble. But he’s more upset by the timing of the release (too late for Oscar consideration) and the general lack of attention. As he told The Wrap recently, “The reactions have been really positive, especially after the premiere at Toronto,” he said, but Fox (who distributed the film) acted like most Hollywood studios when it comes to Spanish-language films: they pretty much dumped it.

“Typically in the United States, a movie that comes from Spain, unless its [Pedro Almodovar], goes to a couple of art-house theaters where it’ll be largely an Anglo audience,” he noted. “Film buffs. That’s the way they always do it. They’re afraid it’s not possible to get a crossover, a movie people would like.”

Mortensen, who speaks fluent Spanish, comes by his interest honestly: though he was born in New York, his family lived in Venezuela and in Argentina when he was a boy, and he’s happy to return to his childhood haunts regularly. “I’ve always wanted to do an Argentine movie,” he told the Wrap, “but the ones I thought were interesting have been unavailable and the rest of them I didn’t think were that good.”

Latino Stand-up Comics in Front of the Camera on LolFlix.com

There are a whole lot of laughs to be found with Latino stand-up comics…and a web site called lolflix.com has put a bunch of them in front of the camera for your viewing pleasure as well, available for streaming and purchase at amazingly good prices.

Johnny Sanchez (Mad TV), Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911) and Al Madrigal (The Daily Show, Free Agents) are the three performers in 3 Non-Juans, subtitled “Stand-Up Comedy for the Spanish Impaired.” Steve Trevino’s first one hour stand-up special, Grand Pa Joe’s Son, is a hilarious testament to his years growing up in a Mexican American household in the heart of Corpus Christi, Texas. And then there’s Legally Brown, hosted by Tony Plana (Ugly Betty) and starring Alex Reymundo (Latin Kings of Comedy) Jerry Bednob, (Harold and Kumar Go to the White Castle), Cristela Alonzo (a Last Comic Standing runner up), Willie Barcena (Comedy Central), and Rick Najera as “Border Patrol Agent Bubba Gomez,” as well as Kiki MelendezHot Tamales Live II, that brings together seven of today’s most talented and diverse comedians: Amy Anderson (Premium Blend), Kira Soltanovich, Nikki Payne, Valentino, Jill-Michele Melean (Mad TV & Reno 911), Nadine Rajabi, and Thea Vidal. And all of them for low-cost streaming or purchase at $5.00 or less.

Individual stand-up sets are available, too. Rick Najera has a half-hour set from 2010 called Diary of a Dad Man, and Puerto Rican comic Bill Santiago has a half-hour set called Pardon My Spanglish as well. You can watch them for less than two bucks a piece or buy them forever for $4.00 a pop.

It’s a great source for an evening’s entertainment, at a lot less cost than a cover charge and a two-drink minimum. And here’s a taste: the trailer for Three Non-Juans (and careful: it’s definitely NSFW), click here.

…and Don’t Forget “Shake It Up!” and “Army Wives” on Cable

Bella Thorne and Adam Irigoyen as still making all-family entertainment a half-hour at a time, in Shake It Up! Check out a new episode at 8:30P on the Disney Channel. You can follow that up with Army Wives, featuring Alyssa Diaz and Joseph Julian Soria at 9P on Lifetime.

A rich night for new episodes with Latinos this Sunday, including Lana Parrilla in Once Upon a Time at 8P on ABC, followed by Madeleine Stowe on Revenge at 9P opposite Makenzie Vega on The Good Wife on CBS. And Clifton Collins, Jr. rounds out the night at 10P in Red Widow on ABC. Watch it while you can; the rating numbers for Widow are not good…

Victoria Justice on Her Music Career, Her Past and Her Future

Victoria Justice has been in front of the camera for years as the star of VicTORIous and Zoey 101 on Nickelodeon, and more recently in her first feature Fun Size. But VicTORIous is done now (rather abruptly)…so what’s next?

Victoria sat down with Sam Ruben of KTLA-TV for a quick remote interview with Victoria on behalf of the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, a major philanthropic focus for broadcaster and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest. She talk about the end of her TV show, her blossoming music career, and gives a hint of what might be coming next. Take a listen, click below:

You can catch a couple of glimpses of Victoria as Tori Vega and earlier persona Shelby Marx in encore episodes of iCarly, Monday March 25 at 3:30P and 4P. And as she says in the interview, she’ll be appearing on Nick’s Kid Choice Awards, 8P on Saturday, March 23.
