A New HBO Latino Special “Habla Women”

HBO has done it again with its award-winning franchise “Habla.” Habla Women is their new documentary of Latina Women talking straight into the camera about life experiences. Actress Gina Rodriguez (Filly Brown, Go for It!), 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist, boxer Marlen Esparza are part of the talk (habla). You can get a glimpse of it in the trailer below. And On Demand April 19.

“My Name is America”: Ms. Ferrera Goes to Washington

She’s an award-winning actress, a popular voice talent, a successful producer, and an activist…and she just celebrated her 29thbirthday. No question, America Ferrera is a shining example of the brilliant young Latinas who are changing the industry and changing the world.

The star of Ugly Betty and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants arrived in Washington on this week, alongside the equally impressive Wilmer Valderrama and spoke in favor of the immigration reform bill that’s currently in the Senate.

“My Name is America,” she begins, and spoke not just to Latinos, but “to any American who is out there, who’s ready to join us.” Check it out here, courtesy of AOL.

America’s been a busy young woman. In recent months she’s appeared in End of Watch with Michael Peña, filmed the multi-part WIGS online series Christine, written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia, and reprised her voice work as “Astrid” in the TV series version of How to Train Your Dragon. (She’s supplied her voice for the feature film sequel as well, coming next year.) Next up, we’ll see her as Cesar Chavez’ wife in Diego Luna’s upcoming biopic, Chavez, while producing and co-starring in X/Y, a drama that also features Amber Tamblyn from Pants and Melonie Diaz, who appeared in the WIGS anthology as well.

You can also catch her and her friends on two rebroadcasts of The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants on MTV: Friday, April 19 at 10P and Saturday, April 20 at 2:30P.

“Vampire,” “Beauty,” “Community,” “Parks” and “Glee” New on Thursday

The last repeats before season finales are reeling out all over the place, but that just gives NBC space for three new episodes of Community with guest star Elena Campbell-Martinez playing a judge at 8P, Aubrey Plaza and Parks and Recreation at 9P and 9:30P, opposite Lea Michele and maybe even Naya Rivera on the winding-down Glee, 9P on FOX. And Michael Trevino is still arousing and terrifying people on Vampire Diaries, at 8P and followed 9P by Beauty and the Beast with Nina Lisandrello, both on the CW.

New “Psych,” “Americans” and “Southland” on Cable Wednesday

The network may be mostly napping, but cable gives us three chances to see Latinos in key roles. James Roday’s Psych continues to score, 10P on USA, and The Americans, with Maximiliano Hernández, moves farther into its first impressive season, also at 10P on FX. Then on Southland season finale, Carmen Corral and Javier Nunez continue their arcs at 10P on TNT. Set up your DVRs.

Suburgatory Season Finale Wednesday Night

It’s reruns and competitions all around tonight, but Bunnie Rivera and the crazies of Chatswin finish up a very funny season with two back-to-back episodes of Suburgatory, at 8P and 8:30P on ABC. Hope they’ll be back for more!

Victoria Justice Loses Her Phone, Got Hacked, Takes Action

We don’t usually follow ‘gossip’ on SeFija!, but this time it shows something special about Victoria Justice’s strength of character. Recently her cell phone was stolen, and shortly thereafter pics from that phone–her in a revealing bathing suit–showed up on a fan web site. Nothing scandalous, but not meant for public consumption.

And Victoria didn’t let it lie. She called out the web site through Twitter, and said, flat out, “My phone was stolen #some1 leaked this.” The shots weren’t meant to be sexy, she said, they were a joke. “cus look like an 80’s aerobics instructor.” But she didn’t leave it there. “Hacking & stealing is NOT COOL. I would never post a picture of myself like that. I’m not taking this lightly & I will find out who stole my private property.” Even the hashtags are stern: #RespectPeoplesPersonalProperty and #Karma.”

The photos have been removed by the offending web site–a good thing. And Justice shows herself to be a straightforward and strong Latina, once again.

“The Voice,” “Love,” “Golden Boy” and “Body of Proof” All New on Tuesday

The NCIS’s might be rerunning for the night, but there are still Latinos on all three networks, including Shakira and the Latino performers on The Voice at 8P on NBC, followed by two out of three Latino heart-throbs (and Eva Longoria in the background) on Ready for Love at 9P. Then you can catch Kevin Alejandro as a very good bad guy on Golden Boy at 10P on CBS, and/or Marisa Ramirez continuing her arc on ABC’s Body of Proof, also at 10P.

Taking a Moment to Appreciate the New “Dallas,” and Its Second-Season Finale on Monday Night

L-r: Jordana Brewster, Jesse Metcalfe, Patrick Duffy,
Josh Henderson and the late Larry Hagman

The reboot of that venerable nighttime soap Dallas got a lot of publicity even before it premiered, and from the very beginning there was much concern. There was every reason that it should have been…well, bad. Almost all of the revivals of once-popular franchises, on TV or on the silver screen (Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch, The Avengers, The Munsters, Knight Rider, etc.) failed almost before they began–Hawaii Five-0 may be the only other exception–but Dallas, somehow, not only survived but thrived. Since its first episodes it has generated some of the highest ratings in cable history, ranking strongly with higher-profile shows like Mad Men and The Walking Dead. Though its second-season numbers did slip slightly, it still attracts 3 million viewers, give or take, each and every week–better than many network programs in this day and age.
