“The Big Wedding” Hits the Big Screens, and Patricia Rae Talks

Ana Ayora, Patricia Rae and Robin Williams The Big Wedding

This Friday, April 26, The Big Wedding appears in movie theaters across the country We talked about it a couple of weeks ago, but it bears repeating: this light rom-com stars some of the biggest names working in Hollywood today, including Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon, Diane Keaton…and Patricia Rae, as the severe mother of the bride who doesn’t speak a word of English.

Patricia, of course, doesn’t have a problem with English. She was born in Manhattan and raised in Queens, and she’s been a bright light in Latino Hollywood for more than a decade, with appearances in movies like Maria Full of Grace and Swimfan, as well as high-end TV series from The Closer and Chuck to–most recently–Blue Bloods and Touch. So Wedding is a big deal for all concerned…and even better, it was–in her own words “a dream job.”

We had a chance to sit down and talk with Patricia about the role and her work in general (and this is just the first part of a longer conversation we’ll share soon). Check it out below…

Busy Night on the Nets at 9 and 10

It starts slow with only Michael Trevino on Vampire Diaries at 8P on the CW, but there’s plenty to watch later on: Oscar Nuñez in The Office at 9P on NBC, opposite Lea Michele and Naya Rivera (maybe) on a new episode of Glee on Fox and Sara Ramirez on Gray’s Anatomy on ABC. At 9:30, Hollywood’ newest bad girl Aubrey Plaza deadpans through one more episode of Parks & Recreation on NBC. Then, at 10P, Guillermo Díaz plays dangerous and handsome has hell on a new episode of Scandal on ABC, and Gina Torres shows up as Jack Crawford’s wife on Hannibal. Not too big a stretch, she’s actually married to Laurence Fishburne, who plays Jack.

Danny Pino in “L&O:SVU” is All That’s New on the Networks Tonight

We don’t give him enough notice, but Danny Pino continues to turn in a solid, positive performance as a Latino and a cop on Law & Order: SVU. Catch up on what’s been happening on the mean streets of New York in a new episode at 9P on NBC.

New On Cable Tonight!

“Unstoppable” and “The Americans” on FX Tonight
With so little else going on, you could do worse than watching Rosario Dawson being tough and beautiful in the exciting runaway train movie, Unstoppable, at 8P on FX, followed by the best in cold war paranoia, a new episode of The Americans, featured Maximiliano Hernández, maybe at 10P.

…and Don’t forget “Psych” at 10P on USA
He’s like a goofy little national treasure, with more than 100 episodes in the can, but watching James Roday (Rodriguez) center stage in Psych is always a pleasure. Catch a new episode, in which “Juliet Wears the Pantsuit,” at 10P on USA.

Nicole Muñoz, Canadian Latina, is a Young Sci-Fi Dream in “Defiance” on SyFy

Nicole Muñoz, born and raised in Vancouver, BC, has been an actress all her life, and for much of it you’ve seen her in sf, fantasy, and superhero projects. He’s also a gifted dancer (award-winning, actually), and starred in Centre Stage: Turn It Up to prove it.

But for some reason, she’s made her biggest mark in science fiction and fantasy films. She was in The Fantastic Four, The Last Mimzy, Tooth Fairy, and Marmaduke. She’s guest-starred on Supernatural, Sanctuary, Stargate: Atlantis, and had a recurring role on ABC’s short-lived astronaut drama Defying Gravity. She’s currently appearing in one of the episodes of the new Netflix binge-fave Hemlock Grove, a murder mystery with werewolves, and she’s just finished filming a horror movie for SyFy, Scarecrow, with Lacey Chabert. She’s even got a pilot in the works, Rita, for Bravo.

And now she’s part of the much-anticipated science fiction/MMORPG drama Defiance, now on Mondays at 9P on SyFy. Or you can catch it any time on hulu, right here.

Here’s a quick interview about the first day of shooting Defiance from the YouTube channel HispanaMMORPG. She’s just as charming as you’d expect. Can you say “up and comer”?

A Case in Point: Latinos in Support All Over the Tube on Tuesday

Cote de Pablo NCIS

We usually just put these notices in the “What’s Worth Watching” box off to the right, but sometimes it’s worth noting: Latino actors, as often as not playing strong and smart (if not always heroic) Latinos are an almost-everyday experience in television these days, and even now, in the waning weeks of the 2012-13 TV season, it’s hard not to run across a program where Latinos are playing key roles…

…and at the same time, there’s not a single show on network TV where a Latino playing a Latino is the star of the show, the character around which the show itself as built. And even, sadly, a couple of the most-watched Latinos on TV are playing emphatically non-Latino parts.

Nonetheless, Tuesday April 23 is an excellent case in point of just how far Latinos in Hollywood had come, and how much farther they have to go. Read the rest of this entry »
