Raúl Esparza Holds Down Two Jobs and Does it Brilliantly

Law and Order Special Victims Unit

For years, Raúl Esparza has been doing amazing things–on stage and on TV. T’s about time he got noticed.

Born in the U.S., but “a Cuban-American at heart,” Raúl Esparza is barely in his forties, and he’s already pretty much conquered Broadway. Now he’s working his way up to the stardom he deserves in television as well.

First it was a couple of episodes of Pushing Daisies back in ’07, then appearances on dramas produced in New York, like the Law and Order franchises and A Gifted Man, all the while continuing his stage work.

And his stage work has been nothing short of amazing. Nominated for Tony Awards on multiple occasions, he’s performed everything from Sondheim to Shakespeare, Pinter to Mamet, Shakespeare to Stoppard. His Great Performances performance as “Bobby” in Sondheim’s Company is a joy to watch even now.

Hannibal

And if exposure alone can make people notice him, then Esparza’s doing the right thing. He’s an undeniable asset to two separate NBC series right now, and terrific in both roles–as intense Assistant D.A. Rafael Barba on every episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit along side the solid Danny Pino, and as the entirely unlikable and equally memorable psychiatrist Robert Chilton on the cult favorite Hannibal, also on NBC (and don’t worry, as all good Hannibal fans know, Chilton–who’s already lost a kidney to the insatiable psychopath–is certain to come to a bad end).

Still, Esparza’s done some other amazing things that don’t get noticed as often:

  • Along with everything else, Esparza’s a talented audio book narrator. The best? He read Stephen King’s Under the Dome in 2009.
  • In 2010, he performed alongsize Lucie Arnaz and Desi Armaz, Jr. In Bablue: The American Songbook Goes Latin, an event honoring Desi Arnaz and his band.
  • He’s even done horror movies before, like Wes Craven’s My Soul To Take in 2010 (though sadly, he doesn’t last long)

Intense, intelligent, funny and sometimes forbidding, Raúl Esparza is a man of many talents. And maybe now, when he’s all over NBC, he’ll get a fraction of the notice he deserves.

“The Single Moms Club,” Smart and Funny in Theaters Today

William Levy, Marlene Forte and Zulay Henao

I have to be honest, I’m not one to run out and see a Tyler Perry movie when it first comes out—but this film, The Single Moms Club, I would recommend.

There are lots of things in this film that I enjoyed, and I was specially impressed when the Latino characters spoke in Spanish and there were no subtitles. It just felt normal.

Eddie Cibrian

Perry put together the perfect cast—Zulay Henao, Eddie Cibrian, William Levy, Marlene Forte (Dallas), Nia Long, Cocoa Brown, Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Amy Smart, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Tyler Perry himself.

At a press conference for the film, Zulay (Esperanza) Henao thanked Tyler Perry for paring her with William Levy. She said she now has so many newfound girlfriends from high school, and even elementary school, that she didn’t know she had, Including new twitter and Instagram followers.

On the question of what she learned from working on this film, Zulay said, “Doing this film for me was really beautiful because I found myself going back to times in my childhood where I maybe didn’t appreciate my mom as much as I thought I did. Now as an adult woman, I can go back and relive some of the experiences with her. I have so much respect for her sacrifices, her working her three jobs. I understand me more as a child now, because I was too rebellious when my parents divorced. So there was a moment where I was really able to reflect. It was very therapeutic, it was nice.”

The main female characters are smart and come from different ethnicities and backgrounds. There’s no male bashing, as the title would make you assume. It’s funny, warm and in many ways, real.

Action and Romance for Latinos in Friday Films

Blockbuster season is about to begin, but this week’s light all around…especially for Latinos.

Ramon Rodriguez is on hand for Aaron Paul’s much-anticipated first feature since Breaking Bad Broke up: Need for Speed, opening Friday, with Aaron Paul.

Modern film distribution is a funny thing. Dark House, with Anthony Ray Perez was released on DVD this Tuesday, but it’s also enjoying a limited run in theaters beginning today. The psychological/horror thriller focuses on Nick Di Santo, who learns that his father is not only alive but can possibly reveal the origin of his son’s dark gift. Together, they travel to an abandoned mansion–one he thought only existed in his childhood imagination.

Zulay Henao, Eddie Cibrian, William Levy, Marlene Forte in Tyler Perry’s newest rom com, The Single Mom’s Club, opening Friday.

Friday, March 14

Jorge Garcia continues his arc on Hawaii Five-O, 8P on CBS…Angelique Cabral is tomorrow’s soldier today on Enlisted, 9P on Fox…Karina Ortiz guests with Marisa Ramirez on Blue Blood, 10P on CBS…and Raúl Esparza continues his arc as the insufferable Dr. Chilton on Hannibal, 10P on NBC. PLUS: Jordana Brewster appears on Ellen DeGeneres Friday afternoon. Check your listings for time and channel.
