In and Out: Krysta Rodriguez Joins, then Leaves “How I Met Your Dad”

Krysta Rodriguez

This spin-off of the ever-popular How I Met Your Mother would have been a great showcase for this multi-talented Latina. But she and its director have both come and gone.

Andy Mientus and Krysta Rodriguez
Smash

Smash, the short-lived but high-profile musical series about musicals, made a big impression on a lot of people last year, but nobody made a bigger impression than Krysta Rodriguez. It isn’t exactly surprising: Krysta had already conquered Broadway, originating the role of Wednesday Addams in the hit musical version of The Addams Family, literally rising from the chorus to replace a lead in the revival of A Chorus Line, and going to be in another revival, this one In the Heights. Even after Smash smashed, Krysta returned to Broadway to star in First Date The Musical, co-starring with Chuck’s Zachary Levi. Not long after, she participated in a concert version of The Hit List, the fictional musical she was a part of in Smash.

So it seemed natural that she’d land a high-profile role at the center of How I Met Your Dad, probably the most talked-about pilot (and most likely to go to full series) of the season. She was set to play Juliet, “a “sexy and flamboyant party girl force of nature, who runs the most successful fashion blog in the country.” Pretty much the female version of Neil Patrick Harris’s Barney Stinson on the original show.

Unfortunately, there seems to be some turmoil at HIMYD , and both Krysta and How I Met Your Mother director Pam Fryman have both left the project before it’s been shot.

It’s a shame. Even if she wasn’t going to get to sing, it would have been nice to see her again.

Latinos Spotted in Hawaii! Jorge Garcia Joins “Hawaii 5-O” as a Regular

Jorge Garcia

It’s the last place you’d expect him to show up, but Jorge Garcia has been elevated from recurring character to regular for the Hawaii-based cop show

Jorge Garcia has had one of the most unusual–and unlikely–careers in Latino Hollywood. It’s not as if he hasn’t been working steadily since 2000; he even had a recurring role in Becker a decade ago. But when he hit it big in Lost, he was, quite frankly, the last one you’d expect to see again, compared to that vast array of beautiful people he worked with (and in fact, a huge number of his cast-mates, from Evangelyne Lilly to Dominic Monaghan to Michael Emerson have done very well since).

with Sarah Jones in Alcatraz

In fact, he’s been working steadily all along, including a Fox series (Alcatraz) that didn’t last long and recurring roles on great shows like Californication and Once Upon a Time. And now he’s going back to Hawaii–home of Lost for many years–to work with another alumni of the cast, Daniel Dae Kim, as a regular on this season Hawaii Five-O.

Jorge will be playing Jerry Ortega, a conspiracy theorist and former high school classmate of Kim’s Detective Lt. Chin Ho Kelly. The character was introduced last season and has re-appeared this year; in fact he’ll appear even more before the end of the season. He’s been such a hit that’s he’s now been moved into a more permanent position. “Jorge very quickly made Jerry an unlikely and valuable part of the Five-O Ohana,” exec producer Peter Lenkov told The Hollywood Reporter. “We have many opportunities planned to put Jerry’s unusual and infectious desire to put the bad guys to good use.”

Monday, March 24

Plenty to watch, and The Fosters finishes for the season on Monday. See our full post!
