Miami Director Kyle Patrick Alvarez Releases his Second David Sedaris Project, “C.O.G.,” on Friday

Kyle Patrick Alvarez

Kyle Patrick Alvarez had some success in the indie/film festival market with his first film, Easier with Practice, based on an essay by David Sedaris. Clearly it was material he liked working with, so he’s gone back to the Sedaris well–deep and wide as it is–for his second film C.O.G. in limited release and on VOD beginning September 20, after a successful film festival tour (it picked up an award in Seattle and a nomination at Sundance).

Eloy Méndez

Alvarez tells the story of a self-absorbed Ivy Leaguer played by Glee’s Jonathan Groff, who decides to find himself (and, if possible, God) by re-inventing himself and taking up with the common people, traveling to Oregon to work on an apple farm. There, he finds a collection of odd characters, including Latino character actor Eloy Méndez (Stealing Las Vegas), and learns far more about the world and himself than he ever intended. “Once again,” Variety said in its review, Alvarez “steers auds to some gloriously uncomfortable places, progressing far beyond debut Easier with Practice. They predict “sleeper success for a distrib willing to stir things up a little.”

Though its theatrical run may be limited, you can already see it in Amazon Watch Instantly right here, on YouTube’s new pay-per-view service here, and elsewhere for as little at $6.99.
