Mel Rodriguez Takes Center Stage in “Getting On”

Mel Rodriguez

He’s been part of some of the best TV series and movies you can remember…but now he’s getting a central role in the new medical drama-comedy on HBO

Mel Rodriguez has one of “those” faces. You swear you’ve met the guy somewhere. And chances are you’ve seen him plenty of times. He was part of the well-reviewed but under-viewed sitcome Running Wilde; he was in Panic Room and Little Miss Sunshine; he was just about the funniest thing in Ben Stiller’s The Watch, and most recently he was in a long arc of episodes on NBC’s Community, back when it was good.

Now, finally, “that guy” is moving center stage, in a new HBO series called Getting On, with Laurie Metcalfe (Roseanne, The Big Bang Theory) and Alex Boorstin (Lois’ voice on Family Guy, a brilliant performer on MadTV, and basically one of the dryest, funniest women on TV).  Mel plays the awesomely named “Patsy de la Serna,” an administrator in the geriatric extended care unit of a down-at-the-heels hospital. It’s already being called “darkly comic” and “brutally honest;” we’ll get to judge for ourselves starting this week, Mondays at 10P on HBO. You can actually catch him in one of his best movie performances, when Bravo shows Little Miss Sunshine on Friday, November 29 at 11:30A (hey, it’s the day after Thanksgiving. What else will you be doing?)
