Alexa Vega Gets Scared to Death, Repeatedly, in “Abandoned Mine,” Opening Thursday August 15

Alexa Vega

No longer just a Spy Kid–or a kid at all–this horror/thriller is just one of half a dozen projects this dynamic young Latina has in the works

It’s a safe bet that Alexa Vega would like to put Spy Kids behind her. Not that there was anything wrong with the energetic and slightly goofy films from Robert Rodriguez that she was part of in 2001, 2002, and 2003 (and yes, in the fourth “legacy” film in 2011), but by and large that was more than ten years ago, and she was barely a teenager when they began. Now she’s about to turn twenty-five, and she’s worked hard–and often–to move beyond the kid-actor roles of the distant past.

If you’ve kept an eye on her, you’ve seen some pretty strong work in projects like The Pregnancy Project and From Prada to Nada. She was a regular in the Nickelodeon series Ruby and the Rockits, and she’s done voices for Unsupervised and guest star turns on shows like Royal Pains. This week, she’s part of a five-person ensemble in Abandoned Mine, a new horror/thriller that’s being released in theaters and made available through Video on Demand. (Vega actually finished her work on the movie almost five years ago, and it’s just–as she says herself “coming to light.”)

Here’s a clip featuring Vega:

…and that’s just the beginning. Alexa has half a dozen other projects already completed or in the works, from comedies like 2b/1ba to dramas like 23 Blast about an athlete who’s suddenly struck blind, to Wicked Blood with Abigail Breslin and Sean Bean. And of course she’s in the endless Latino cast of Machete Kills, playing the charmingly named hit-girl “Killjoy.”

And if you’d like to catch even more of her, watch her recent interview on KTLA’s Morning News right here, or catch her as part of the team on one of Rick Moranis last films, 1994’s Little Giants, playing on ABC Family Saturday August 17 at 11:30A.
