Jorge of Alcatraz?

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Jorge Garcia, the generously proportioned Latino actor with the kinky ponytail, since J.J. Abram’s Lost finally faded into the timestream. Now–or rather, soon–he’ll be back, hopefully for a longer stay, on one of Abrams’ newest and most anticipated project, Alcatraz, scheduled for a midseason premiere on FOX.

It’s not a prison drama–at least it doesn’t look like one from this distance. It has something to do with all the prisoners on Alcatraz disappearing years ago, and now returning to the deserted prison with all sort of Lost-like secrets and agendas. And at the middle is kindly Diego Soto–Hurly himself!–playing a doctor who is “smarter than he looks,” by his own admission. He’s a willing if somewhat bemused member of the team that’s trying to figure out what the heck happened and what the heck is going to happen next, and it’s certainly one of the few series on the horizon that actually has a prayer of recapturing the Lost frenzy of a few years ago.

Check out this extended trailer here and try to puzzle through it. We’ll keep an eye on Garcia (playing another Latino character on TV!) when the series actually appears out of the fog of San Francisco Bay right after the first of the year…
