Alexis Bledel More Visible than Ever in “Brass Teapot,” “Remember Sunday,” and a New Fox Pilot

Alexis Bledel is one of a group of Latinas we’ve talked about before. Like Sara Paxton, JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Reba, Animal Hospital), Julie Gonzalo (Dallas), Bella Thorne, and Sarah Ramos (Parenthood), Bledel considers herself a proud Latina, but her blue eyes, light skin, and American accent keeps her from playing Latina roles. That’s the case once again in The Brass Teapot, a light-hearted romantic fantasy (based on a comic) starring, among others, Juno Temple, Michael Angarano and Alia Shawkat. The story follows a couple in their mid-twenties who find a mysterious, magical brass teapot which makes them money but at a surprising price. Then, just a couple of weeks later, she stars in a new Hallmark telemovie, Remember Sunday, what looks to be a more serious version of Fifty First Dates with Zachary Levy of Chuck fame.

Even before these two-releases-in-one-month April, Alexis has been keeping busy. She first came to national notice in the cult rom-com fave, The Gilmore Girls years ago. Then there was The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and its sequel, the historical drama The Conspirator directed by Robert Redford, and the independent Canadian film The Kate Logan Affair. She also performed in a live production of Regrets at the New York City Center. Most recently, she had a well-received arc on another cult fave, Mad Men. Read the rest of this entry »

Naya Rivera Repeats Herself on Craig Ferguson Friday

It’s a repeat, but still worth it: Naya Rivera of Glee stops by to chat with Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show, 12:35A on CBS.

“Vegas,” “Blue Bloods,” “Grimm” Feature Latinos on Friday

Danny Wahlberg and Marisa
on the set of Blue Bloods

Aimee Garcia is still supporting Michael Chiklis and Dennis Quaid on Vegas, 9P on CBS. Marisa Ramirez is deep in her arc on Blue Bloods, 10P on CBS. And Lisa Vidal is back as DA Lauren Castro along with Bertila Damas as the tough-talking (in all Spanish) Pilar, on Grimm at 9P on NBC.

From Cinematographer to Director: Guillermo Navarro Gets a Tasty Assignment with “Hannibal”

NBC’s much-anticipated new eerie-series Hannibal–one of a whole host of psychopath/serial-killer dramas introduced this year (including Bates Motel, The Following, and Do No Harm)–is finally premiering Thursday night at 10P, and though there are no Latinos in the week-to-week cast, a highly respected and award-winning Latino cinematographer, Mexican-born Guillermo Navarro is behind the camera: he’s been slated to direct at least three of the upcoming episodes.

Born in 1955, Navarro has worked in Hollywood since 1993. He’s a frequent collaborator of Guillermo del Toro and Robert Rodriguez, and in 2006 he received the Oscar for Best Cinematography for del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth. He’s also picked up BAFTA nominations and Goya Award and Independent Spirit Award wins. His work as cinematographer is crazy-impressive, including everything from Desperado and Stuart Little to the Hellboy movies both parts of Twilight: Breaking Dawn, and the upcoming del Toro epic Pacific Rim. Sarah Shahi kicks Some More Butt “Person of Interest”

Sarah Shahi usually plays bright and brave young women (as in the USA series Fairly Legal or NBC’s Chicago Fire), but her recurring role on Person of Interest is much more: now she’s a major kick-ass assassin/secret agent, a kind of dark version of Jim Caviezel’s John Reese. Her second appearance is Thursday at 9P on CBS. Hopefully there will be many more.

Eva Longoria on Leno Thursday Night

Eva Longoria is always a busy woman (have you seen her new Doritos commercials?), but never too busy to spend the night with Jay Leno. Check her out Thursday at 11:35P on The Tonight Show.

One More Busy Thursday: “Parks,” “Office,” “Gray’s,” “Go On,” and “Scandal” All New

Aubrey Plaza

Nice to see at least a couple of networks getting into Latinos in the waning weeks of the season. Aubrey Plaza is wonderful as ever in Parks & Recreation, 8:30P on NBC, followed by Oscar Nuñez in an Office episode all about the documentary that’s been taking for seven years, followed in turn by Tonita Castro as the cheeriest member of a grief counseling group even in Go On at 9:30P. If you want to go more dramatic, try Sara Ramirez as a super-surgeon on Gray’s Anatomy, 9P on ABC, or Guillermo Díaz as the toughest guy in Washington in Scandal at 10P on ABC.

Finally! Rebecca Delgado Smith in “How To–” Oh. Never Mind

She was set to be a supporting character in the last midseason show to premiere on ABC…but sometimes things don’t happen the way you think.

This isn’t a story about racism; it’s a story about Hollywood. Most actors–even that small group that can truly call themselves ‘working actors’–can wait year to get a part on a TV pilot. And only a very few of those pilots ever make it on the air. And even then–even then–the actors that have been with the project all along may not make it all the way.

That’s what happened with Rebecca Delgado Smith, a very funny, very smart young Latina comedian who has been part of the Harvard Sailing Team improv group–live and on-line, in New York and in L.A.–for years. She and her husband Chris Smith (who’s also a member of HST) even have a performance set of their own as “The New York Smiths.” So the new ABC show with Sarah Chalke from Scrubs was the obvious next step, and pretty big.
