Steve Gaub and the VXF on Beauty and the Beast

Steve Gaub is a producer and production manager, known for Oblivion (2013), TRON: Legacy (2010) and Terminator Salvation (2009). Now include the live-action film, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The live-action film has surpassed the animation version in both domestic and worldwide earnings. Which of course has Disney looking towards the future for other films in the live-action realm.

We got to talk to visual effect producer Gaub about his work on this version of Beauty and the Beast. I asked him about what kind of challenges he encountered bringing this classic to live, “it was a little daunting, but they really wanted to stick to this feeling like a normal movie—live action movie with no animation characters—didn’t want it to come across as cartoon characters.” he said.

You can listen to the audio (a little scrachy) but he had a lot to say and I think it was informative.

Buena Vista Social Club: Adios Doc

Buena Vista Social Club: Adios

Buena Vista Social Club 1999

Buena Vista Social Club 1999

Buena Vista Social Club: AdiosI’ve been a huge fan of Cuban music especially anything Afro-Cubano. I grew up listening to acts like Beny More (one of my mom’s favorites), Arsenio Rodriguez, Celia Cruz and many more and of course, years later (late 1990s) being introduce to the wonderful talent that made up the Buena Vista Social Club. My introduction to the late Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo and Omara Portuondo was a wonderful treat for me. And watching the 1999 documentary Buena Vista Social Club by director/writer Wim Wenders, Nick Gold and musician Ry Cooder was so insightful for the time.

Now there’s a new documentary that revisits with the remaining original members and explore their contribution to the unknown history of Cuba.

The upcoming documentary Buena Vista Social Club: Adios is set against the backdrop of Cuba’s captivating musical history, listen to the story of the band, their landmark 1997 album, and the extraordinary circumstances that brought them together in theatres Friday, May 26, directed by Lucy Walker.
