Only kidding: Lalo Alcaraz’ “self-deportation” becomes reality for the Republican Party

Rachel Maddow exposes the whole silly–and telling—story

This just doesn’t seem possible…but it’s true. A few years ago–in the midst of the battle over California anti-immigration law, Prop 187–comic and satirist Lalo Alcaraz created an absurd character: Daniel D Portado (get it? “Deportado”?) who advocated the newly invented concept of “self-deportation”–that is, illegal immigrants lining up at the border to deport themselves because they were, you know, illegal.

Back in 1994 then-Governor of California didn’t get the joke, and started to talk about what a good idea “self-deportation” was. And just a few days ago, Republican presidential candidates started talking about it again as if it was a real, practical concept–a real thing.

On Wednesday night, Feb. 1, Lalo–now the Jefe-in-Chief at POCHO.com–appeared on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show as part of an excruciatingly detailed (and excruciatingly embarrassing) expos é about the movement and the GOP. Here’s the full interview, lifted part and parcel from the increasingly wonderful POCHO.

POCHO Jefe-in-Chief Lalo Alcaraz joined The Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC Wednesday evening to discuss the fictional Daniel D Portado character he created in 1994 to mock a racist California anti-immigrant measure. Lalo’s “self-deportation” hoax solution for undocumented residents was reborn last week as GOP hopeful Mitt Romney suggested “illegal” immigrants should “self-deport.” Our apologies to iPad and iPhone users. Microsoft-owned MSNBC insists on using outdated and incompatible proprietary Flash embedding technology, which makes this clip impossible to see for millions of web viewers.
