We got to sit down with Lowriders’ director Ricardo de Montreuil and two of its actors, Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy, Luke Cage) and Gabriel Chavarria (East Los High). We talked about the making of the film and the folks who made it happen, like producer Brian Grazer.

Talking to director Montreuil, we found out about their four-week shooting schedule and how they ended up with the Lowriders title. I enjoyed listening to Theo Rossi’s description of being a “blue color actor.” Watch the video below for his full explanation. I am very proud to see Gabriel Chavarria’s growing career blossom.

The film Lowriders has so much more going for it than the title suggests. It’s in the same vein as A Better Life, and it shows another slice of the Los Angeles stories. I thought the mood and the music chosen for this film were on point.

Synopsis: Lowriders is set against the vibrant backdrop of East LA’s near-spiritual car culture and follows the story of Danny (Chavarria), a talented young street artist caught between the lowrider world inhabited by his old-school father (Bichir) and ex-con brother (Rossi), and the adrenaline-fueled outlet that defines his self-expression.

By Angela M. Ortíz

A few months ago I got a chance to be on the set of A Father’s Journey for the filming of a pivotal scene, the crash. It took two-and-half-hours to set up for a few seconds on screen. My invitation came from actor and first-time director, David Fernandez Jr.

A Father’s Journey

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing David for a few years now, watching him grow as an actor and now as a director of a project that’s very dear and personal to him.

As we all know, independent films take a long time to complete; it’s always about the money. But when you get the right crew together, things get done. Now listen in on my conversations with David, Lou and Joey as they talk about their involvement with A Father’s Journey.

Starring Lou Pizarro (Operation Repo) Mayra Leal (Machete) Joey Medina (Original Latin Kings of Comedy), and David Fernandez Jr. (End of Watch).

“Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” Teaser and Trailer

We wanted to share the latest teaser trailer of the Paranormal Activity franchise fill with Latino actors, Jorge Diaz, Carlos Pratt, Richard Cabral, David Fernandez Jr., Crystal Santos, and many more. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is in theaters January 3, 2014.

Guillermo Díaz continues on “Scandal” and finishes up “Weeds” Tonight

Guillermo told us himself back in January, (really: check it out here) and now it’s confirmed: even as he continues work on the ABC nighttime politico-romance Scandal, he’ll be reprising his role as “Guillermo Garcia Gomez” on the last three episodes of Showtime’s Weeds, beginning with the 100th episode on Sunday, September 9.

TV Guide quotes Weeds creator Jenji Kohan as saying, “I love Guillermo. Shonda Rhimes called me and was like, ‘You want my boy back?’ I’m like, ‘I love him!’ and she says, ‘I love him too!’ She was generous enough to let us have him for a little while.” And especially for Weeds fans: looks like Guillermo is only one of the series “old friends” who may be appearing in the final arc. Look out for Renee Victor as Lupita and David Fernandez Jr.

Weeds two-part series finale is set for tonight, Sunday, Sept. 16 at 10P on Showtime.

Michael Peña, America Ferrera, Natalie Martinez join Jake Gyllenhaal in “End of Watch,” coming to a theater near you this year

There’s one essential step involved in getting a big-time movie from the set to the theater–one we often forget: the distributor. In 21st Century Hollywood, even the biggest studios and biggest stars can have trouble getting a distributors to pick up their project and push it into the neighborhood megaplexes, so getting that deal–which can come at any point, even after the film is complete–has recently become big news. Without an agreement, even the most prominent stars can see their picture sliding straight to DVD.

That’s the case with End of Watch, the new cop-drama from David Ayer, the writer-director who gave us the scripts for Training Day, The Fast and Furious, S.W.A.T. and some other impressive and profitable dramas in the genre. This time, in his third directorial debut, he’s teaming Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as “two longtime LAPD partners confronting marriage, love, fatherhood and the harsh realities of the Los Angeles streets.” Which sounds a whole lot like Training Day or his less-than-successful directorial debut Harsh Times, but you never know. Best of all, America Ferrera and Natalie Martinez are part of the impressive supporting cast. Imagine that: a contemporary cop drama set in L.A. that actually has Latinos in the cast (as something other than ‘bangers). And other Latinos involved in the film are; Maurice Compte (Breaking Bad, Southland), Corina Calderon (All She Can) and David Fernandez Jr. (The Shifting.)

And the big news? A distribution company called Open Road Films, that just scored a nice hit with Liam Neeson’s The Gray, has just picked up End of Watch for nationwide distribution, premiering sometime later this year.

Maybe it was the solid cast or the equally solid profits that a good cop-drama can produce. Or maybe it was Ayers’ decision to go the “ found footage” route with this one–he says the whole picture will be told through “footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire.” It’s a difficult approach to pull off, though it’s become very popular with filmmakers over the last few years, beginning with The Blair Witch Project and continuing through Cloverfield and The Paranormal Activity franchise, still going strong. David Fernandez, Jr. tells us that End of Watch, starring Michael Peña (and featuring Fernandez, too!) is returning to the big-screen theaters for a limited run beginning December 7 as part of a concerted Academy Awards push by the studios. And it may work: Peña’s already been nominated for a Spirit Award.
